Hugo Everhard Cratz von Scharfenstein (* before 1595 ; † March 13, 1663 in Regensburg) was Bishop of Worms from 1654 to 1663 . He was previously also a diplomat and was, among other things, Kurmainzer chief envoy in the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia .

Life

He came from the Cratz von Scharfenstein family . The father was Anton Cratz von Scharfenstein, the mother Katharina geb. from Metternich to Zierel . The brother Johann Philipp Cratz von Scharffenstein was a general, first in imperial and then in Swedish service. Her great uncle Philipp II. Kratz von Scharfenstein was elected bishop of Worms in 1604, but died shortly after his election.

Since 1602 Hugo Everhard had a prebende at the cathedral in Trier . Positions in Mainz and Worms followed . He completed part of his training at the University of Siena . He can be traced there in 1615.

In Trier he was cathedral chapter from 1623. From 1627 he was archdeacon in Dietkirchen . Cratz von Scharfenstein was archbishop chaplain from 1636 and cathedral provost from 1653. Between 1611 and 1663 he was provost of the St. Paulin monastery .

From 1629 he was cathedral choirmaster in Mainz . In 1638 he became cathedral curator. He was provost of the St. Bartholomäus-Stift in Frankfurt am Main since 1638 . In 1663 he donated the choir altar to the associated electoral and coronation church.

From a secular point of view, Cratz von Scharfenstein was imperial and Kurmainzer council. He also served as a chamberlain in Kurmainz. Since 1645 he had been the chief envoy of the Elector of Mainz and Imperial Chancellor in the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia. But he left in 1647, so that Nikolaus Georg Reigersberg signed the contracts for Kurmainz.

In 1650 he had tried in vain for the position of a coadjutor in Trier. As Provost of Worms and Chancellor of Heidelberg University , Cratz von Scharfenstein was elected Bishop of Worms in 1654. Between 1655 and 1657 he officiated as the imperial principal commissioner on the Reichsdeputationstag in Frankfurt. Cratz von Scharfenstein took part in the Reichstag of Regensburg in 1663 as ambassador to the Electorate of Mainz . He died in the course of the negotiations. After his death he was buried at his own request in the Worms Church of Our Lady , in front of the Marien Altar. His epitaph has been handed down, the grave slab is still preserved.
