The Guardian Angel Church ( Church of the Holy Guardian Angels ) is a Catholic parish church in Schaffhausen , a district of the municipality of Wadgassen , Saarlouis district . She bears the patronage of the holy guardian angels . In the list of monuments of the Saarland, the church is a single monument listed.

history

Until the church was built, the Catholics of Schaffhausen belonged to the parish of the Visitation of Mary in Wadgassen . In 1915 the parish of Wadgassen was responsible for over 9,000 parishioners in four localities. This led to the two large branches, Hostenbach and Schaffhausen , becoming independent and the need to build new parish churches. After a satisfactory building site had been found for the new Schaffhausen parish church and a plan for financing had been drawn up, the groundbreaking ceremony took place on June 10, 1933, and the foundation stone was laid on September 10 of the same year . Previously, in June 1933, the plans by the architects Weiss and Schultheis ( Saarbrücken ) were approved by the episcopal vicariate in Trier , the government commission of the Saar region in Saarbrücken and the local building authority. The local construction company M. Schneider was responsible for the earth , masonry and concrete work . The foundations were made of split concrete, the surrounding walls in Völklingen cinder blocks . For the lining of the side walls of the nave was Merziger pumice use. The construction of the interior was carried out in steel frame construction by the company B. Seibert (Saarbrücken). This was done on the one hand to reduce the construction costs and on the other hand to achieve a free interior space without columns . The church was inaugurated on October 7, 1934.

In 1953/1954 the tower was built according to plans by the architect Felix Stenger (Saarbrücken). From 1990 to 1995 the church underwent a complete restoration .

Architecture and equipment

The church was a long house - Basilica with Bauhaus facade in gotisierendem historicism built. The use of Bauhaus elements means that the church building clearly distinguishes itself from historicism. Church painter Alfred Gottwald ( Bonn ) created the painting " Archangel Raphael gives the hiker Tobias protective escort" above the right altar and the painting of Our Lady as Queen of Heaven above the left side altar, both of which reach the ceiling. The mural “Christ, the King” in the chancel, also by Gottwald, was replaced in 1991 by a Christ window, which creates an almost “mystical” incidence of light. Two other windows have the Secret Revelation as their content. Furthermore, 11 of 14 windows in the nave from the time of construction are equipped with representations of guardian angels, with scenes from the Old Testament on the left and scenes from the New Testament on the right .

Inside the church, the chancel was redesigned in 1968 by the painter and sculptor Ernst Alt (Saarbrücken). He created an altar made of Roman travertine , a tabernacle stele in the form of a jumping fruit, a lamb in the opening of the cross in the right part of the chancel, and the ambo with the wings of an eagle about to take flight.

Under the gallery, to the left of the main portal, there is a chapel, which serves as a place of prayer and memorial for the people of the parish who died in the war. The center of the chapel, inaugurated on February 1, 1989, is a Pietà , which was created by an artist from Oberammergau .

The 700 kg guardian angel relief in the tympanum above the entrance portal was made in 1995 from Eifel sandstone by the sculptor Klaus Huselstein (Schaffhausen) .

Tower and bells

Another view of the church

For lack of money, the church was initially built without a bell tower . The approximately 30 m high tower was finally built in 1953/1954. Stahlbau Seibert (Saarbrücken) supplied the necessary steel and Mergener ( Schwalbach ) carried out the construction work.

The church's first bell was purchased in 1934. It was a bronze bell from 1434, which was consecrated to the Virgin Mary, and was purchased second-hand from the parish of Büren-Itzbach (Saarlouis district). In 1938 the second bell was purchased, dedicated to St. Antonius and came from Überherrn . The two bells found their place in a bell house above the gallery . When the bell tower was erected in 1954, the church council decided to have four bells cast at the Mabilon bell foundry ( Saarburg ). The old Marienglocke could no longer be rung for safety reasons, so that its bonze material was poured into the new bells. The Antonius Bell was given to the civil parish, which put it into service for the cemetery chapel. The new bells were consecrated on December 12, 1954.

organ

View to the organ gallery

The first organ in the church was purchased in 1936. It was a used instrument from the Palatinate, which was purchased for 900 Reichsmarks . In the end, the total costs, including the incidental expenses for transport, renovation and construction, amounted to almost 1,300 Reichsmarks. After the organ was first heard in the church on August 23, 1936, it was still in service for around 30 years. Then it was in the church of the Schaffhausen neighboring town of Friedrichweiler , where today there is an organ built by the Mühleisen company from Leonberg.

In 1963 the board of directors asked the organ building workshop Hugo Mayer ( Heusweiler ) to make an offer for a new organ with 34 registers , divided into 3 manuals and pedal . On the part of the diocese, the planned organ was found to be too big for the church and was not realized. As a result, the Hugo Mayer company built an instrument with 25 registers in 1965, divided into 2 manuals and a pedal . The organ corresponds completely to the “neo-baroque sound ideal” of this time (a lot of overtones , little fundamental ), as expressed in the organ movement . The organ was consecrated on May 30, 1965.
