Franz Gmainer-Pranzl (born September 16, 1966 in Steyr ) is an Austrian Roman Catholic theologian and priest .

Life

After graduating from high school in Steyr in 1984, he studied specialist theology at Kath.-Theol from 1984 to 1989 . University of Linz . In 1989 he obtained the Mag. Theol. ( Linz ) with the diploma thesis with Walter Raberger : The self-transcendence of anthropology. Attempt to present the transcendental Christology of Karl Rahner . From 1989 to 1994 he studied as a student at the International Theological Convict Collegium Canisianum in the diploma course in philosophy and in the doctoral course in dogmatics and ecumenism at the Catholic-Theological Faculty of the University of Innsbruck . From 1991 to 1994 he was assistant to Karl Heinz Neufeld at the Institute for Fundamental Theology at the University of Innsbruck . The dissertation with Lothar Lies and Adolf Darlap in 1994 for Dr. theol. 1994 awarded. The Mag. Phil. fac. theol. (Innsbruck) he obtained his diploma thesis from Otto Muck in 1995 : “Philosophy of the world. An examination of Husserl's Crisis Script ". After being ordained a priest ( Diocese of Linz ) on June 29, 1995, he was assistant to Hanjo Sauer at the Institute for Dogmatics and Fundamental Theology of the Catholic Theological College / Private University Linz from 1995 to 2002 . At the same time he worked pastorally in the parishes of St. Konrad and Stadtpfarre Urfahr (Linz). From 1995 to 2004, e completed a doctorate in philosophy at the University of Vienna as a professional . After the dissertation for Dr. phil. In 2004, with Franz Martin Wimmer and Helmuth Vetter , he became professor at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Salzburg on March 1, 2009 and head of the “Intercultural Theology and Study of Religions” center. On October 4, 2011, he obtained his habilitation in fundamental theology at the University of Innsbruck with the cumulative habilitation thesis “The logos of Christian hope in polyglot responsibility. Studies on a responsive-theological theory of knowledge "with Kurt Appel , Margit Eckholt , Markus Knapp and Joachim Georg Piepke . Since 2011 he has been the editor of the book series “Salzburg Interdisciplinary Discourses”.

In June 2020 it was announced that he would succeed Michael Max as Rector of the St. Virgil Education Center in Salzburg . The handover should take place in early September 2020.
