Franz (von) Juraschek (born June 8, 1895 in Vienna ; † November 20, 1959 there ) was an Austrian art historian and monument conservator , state curator in Upper Austria and from 1952 in Burgenland .

Life

Franz Juraschek, born as Franz von Juraschek, studied art history at the University of Vienna . He was the son of the statistician Franz von Juraschek . After receiving his doctorate in 1918, he worked on behalf of the Federal Monuments Office until 1924. Then until 1939 he was the publishing director of Krystall-Verlag .

In 1939 he took over from the Upper Austrian state curator Erwin Hain , who was forced to retire for “racial reasons” in Linz , his position and from then on was subordinate to the Gauleitung Oberdonau. In 1938 Juraschek applied for membership in the NSDAP , but this was no longer approved due to the affiliation that took place shortly thereafter .

He repeatedly had differences with Gauleiter August Eigruber about the goods and monasteries confiscated by the Catholic Church , which, in contrast to Eigruber, he wanted to preserve as monuments. Due to this, Juraschek was also fired in 1942. The termination was postponed several times, so that he could effectively remain in service until the end of the war.

The rejection of another application for membership in the party in 1944, although he paid membership fees until 1945 and his status only as a party candidate , he interpreted after the end of the war as a political rejection of Eigruber and therefore sought exemption from the registration obligation under the Prohibition Act . However, this was rejected in 1947.

After the end of the war he was briefly detained by the American CIC , but released again after 24 days. He was immediately put back into service by the new Upper Austrian governor, Adolf Eigl . He remained state curator in Upper Austria until 1951, when he was transferred to Vienna, where he also kept his old place of residence for the entire time. In 1952 Juraschek was appointed state curator in Burgenland. He carried out this activity until his death in 1959. Juraschek was buried in the Vienna Central Cemetery .

Juraschek's sister Felicitas was the mother of the economist Friedrich August von Hayek , other siblings were sister Greta and brother Fritz .
