Franz Karl Schleicher (also Franz Carl Schleicher ; born February 5, 1756 in Rinteln , † January 23, 1815 in Kassel ) was a German geodesist , war scientist and university professor . He is considered a pioneer of academic training for junior military leaders.

Live and act

Schleicher was the son of a forest clerk. He initially received private tuition and then went to the University of Rinteln . There he tried his hand at studying theology and law , but was not enthusiastic about any of the subjects. After only a year he left the university and went to Kassel . There he turned to the mathematical sciences under the guidance of Johann Matthias Matsko . Since his financial resources did not allow for a longer study, he went back to his hometown, where he then worked as a writer and, among other things, brought out the introduction to hydrostatics .

Schleicher entered the service of the Kingdom of Prussia . In the beginning there was a frequent change of job. He became a surveyor in 1776 , then in 1777 a teacher of mathematical war science in the Lossow Fusilier Regiment in Minden . After a brief episode from 1779 as a landscape secretary in the county of Schaumburg , he returned to teaching. In 1780 he became the second teacher of war science at the cadet corps in Kassel with the rank of lieutenant , in 1787 teacher of theoretical mathematics and a sense of proportion at the artillery school in Kassel.

On December 21, 1787, Schleicher was appointed full university professor of tactics and all war science at the University of Marburg and was promoted to the rank of captain on this move . The appointment of Schleicher can be classified as a curiosity, because although he had not completed a university degree and therefore did not receive a doctorate , he received a seat with a voice at the Philosophical Faculty . He eventually even made it to the dean of the faculty. Schleicher held various lectures at the university on subjects that were important for junior military leaders. He is considered a pioneer of academic training for junior military leaders. In addition, he regularly emphasized the importance of mathematics for science and especially for war science.

When the State Economic Institute was founded at the university on September 12, 1789 , he was a member there for the subject of practical measuring art. In 1786 and 1803 he was also director of this institute.

On January 24, 1805, Schleicher accepted the appointment as a teacher at the artillery school in Kassel and also on August 23, 1805 as a surveyor inspector there.

Schleicher was a member of the Academy of Painters, Sculptors and Architecture in Kassel. The Detmold Councilor Christoph Ferdinand August von Schleicher and the progenitor of the noble family von Schleicher was his brother.
