Franz Klühs
Franz Klühs (born May 5, 1877 in Neuenkirchen , Ruegen Island , † January 7, 1938 in Berlin ) was a German social democrat, editor and resistance fighter against National Socialism .
Life
Franz Klühs, the son of a country mailman, was married to Gertrud Klühs (1893–1976), née Thape, who became a member of the city council of Greater Berlin after the Second World War. The couple had two children (Alfred 1920–1968, Dörte 1928–1984) and lived in Berlin-Tempelhof in Kaiserkorso 102.
After attending primary school, he learned the profession of typesetter and joined the SPD in 1895 . From 1900 to 1920 he worked as an editor for various social democratic party newspapers and from 1920 as deputy editor-in-chief of the SPD central organ Vorwärts .
After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , the Vorwärts was confiscated and banned on February 28, 1933, so Klühs lost his job. In their house on the Kaiserkorso, Klühs and his wife set up a lending library from their own resources to secure their livelihood. This shop was also a meeting place for the now illegal SPD.
After a meeting of the SPD in exile in Prague, Franz Klühs was arrested on August 16, 1933 in Berlin and taken to the Columbia-Haus concentration camp . He was mistreated there for several weeks, then was taken to the police prison on Alexanderplatz and then to the Moabit remand prison .
On June 20, 1934, his trial before the 4th Criminal Senate of the Reichsgericht took place in Leipzig ; he was sentenced to two years and nine in prison for “preparation for high treason” and “violation of the law on the (prohibited) formation of new parties” Months and sentenced to pay court costs.
Franz Klühs had to stay in Tegel prison until June 20, 1936 , when he was released early as a sick man. He died on January 7, 1938 of the long-term effects of the torture he suffered in a hospital; on February 12, 1938, hundreds of people paid their last respects to him in the Wilmersdorf crematorium and his urn was found in the Heidefriedhof in Berlin-Mariendorf (field K IV 172) buried.
