Franz Kraus (born October 4, 1879 in Chotieschau ; Austria-Hungary , † May 22, 1962 in Scheinfeld ) was a Sudeten German publisher and cultural functionary.

Life

Franz Kraus was born on October 4, 1879 in Chotieschau , which belonged to the Mies district in the Kingdom of Bohemia . His family came from the Platten area.

Kraus learned the book trade in Pilsen in Wendelin Steinhauser's bookstore and continued his training in Aachen in 1900 in the bookstore founded by Peter Kaatzer . In 1902 he joined the JG Calvesche Hof- und Universitäts-Buchhandlung in Prague, founded by Johann Gotthold Calve (1757–1806) and in 1911 became a business representative. In addition, he took over the distribution of the magazine "Deutsche Arbeit", which was published with the help of Charles University Rector August Sauer .

After the outbreak of World War I , Kraus volunteered and served from 1915 to 1917 in the Austro-Hungarian infantry regiment "Edler von Hortstein" No. 92 . After the end of the war, he relocated his field of activity from Prague to Reichenberg , where in 1919 he founded the "Sudetendeutschen Verlag Franz Kraus" and bookstore. In 1922 he was a co-founder of the Nordböhmischen Verlag GmbH, which mainly published school books.

Kraus was able to win well-known employees and supporters for his Sudeten German publishing house, including a. Emil Lehmann , Adolf Hauffen , Erich Gierach and later Adalbert Schmidt . In addition to a large number of its own publications by Sudeten German authors, the publishing house has made an almost comprehensive bibliographical record of Sudeten German publications.

Kraus made special contributions to the further publication of the Prague-Reichenberger Stifterausgabe (PRA) initiated by August Sauer, a historical-critical edition of the writings of Adalbert Stifter . In 1936 Kraus published the "Sudeten-Almanach", the "Yearbook of German Publishers in Czechoslovakia ".

When the Sudetenland had become a separate Reichsgau of the German Empire as a result of the Munich Agreement , Kraus, who had joined the NSDAP , was appointed head of the Reichsschrifttumskammer for the newly founded Reichsgau Sudetenland .
