Franz Magnis-Suseno , SJ (* as Franz Graf von Magnis ; May 26, 1936 in Eckersdorf ; Glatz district ; Lower Silesia Province ) is a Catholic theologian and social philosopher in Indonesia .

Life

Franz Magnis-Suseno comes from the noble family von Magnis . His parents were Ferdinand von Magnis auf Eckersdorf and Straßnitz (1905-1996) and Princess Maria Anna zu Löwenstein-Wertheim-Rosenberg (1914-2000). His grandfather was Anton Franz von Magnis . After the family was expelled to West Germany in 1945, Franz Magnis-Suseno graduated from the St. Blasien college in 1955 . Then he entered the Jesuit order . He then studied philosophy and, with the approval of the religious superiors, went to Indonesia as a missionary at his own request . In 1973 he received his doctorate from the University of Munich on the subject of Normative Requirements in the Thinking of Young Marx . Since he still felt obliged to Indonesia, he learned the national language and in 1977 took Indonesian citizenship and the surname Suseno . In Indonesia he taught as a lecturer at the Jakarta Philosophical University , whose rector he became, and at the University of Indonesia .

His Christian-social concerns include social justice, solidarity with the poor and religious tolerance. He rendered great services to the Christian-Muslim dialogue.

In 2001 he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany . The Theological Faculty of the University of Lucerne awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2002 . Franz Magnis-Suseno declined to be awarded the Indonesian Achmad Bakrie Prize 2007 for his social commitment. He justified the rejection with the lack of help from the Bakrie group for the victims of a mud volcano, which destroyed numerous villages because of an underground drilling by the company group, so that the affected residents lost all of their property.
