Life

Education and family

Franz Moroder was born in 1847 to Jan Matie Moroder (1802–1849), a merchant in Ancona and St. Ulrich, and Marianna Perathoner da Lenèrt. He attended schools in Ortisei, Bressanone and Trento , first worked as a clerk in a cutlery shop in Trento and Bolzano and was finally trained as a merchant in Val Gardena branches in St. Petersburg , London and Paris . He learned English and French, even translated poems from English into Ladin and wrote an unpublished version of his book The Val Gardena in French. In 1875 he married his cousin Marianna Moroder, sister of the academic painter Josef Moroder-Lusenberg . He had fourteen children; the second son was the sculptor Rudolf Moroder Lenèrt from Val Gardena . His daughter Adele Moroder , married to the sculptor Ludwig Moroder , wrote numerous stories in Ladin. Franz Moroder was also active as a poet in the Ladin language and musically as a violin and cello player. He also published some self-composed musical pieces.

In 1869 he and his brother Alois Moroder founded the trading company for wooden toys and church facilities, the Brothers Moroder .

The Moroder brothers expanded their activities in church art abroad by taking over the workshop of Franz Joseph Simmler in Offenburg in the then Grand Duchy of Baden in 1904 . It was run by his sons Eduard and Rudolf and employed up to forty artisans. The company received ten awards, including three gold medals , at the world exhibitions in London and Paris, in Eger, Bozen, Vienna, St. Petersburg and Florence.

Local political career

At the age of 25, Moroder was elected to the Ortisei community committee in 1872. From 1886 he was a corresponding member of the Bozen Chamber of Commerce and Industry and was awarded a medal of honor by them in 1898. In 1902 he became community leader. As such, he campaigned for the construction of the first communal high-pressure water pipeline, some places in the Cuecenes brook were secured by torrent barriers and the Raschötzer forest was protected from wood thieves. He founded the first savings bank in the valley and was also the first director of the same. It is thanks to Moroders' initiative that Ortisei was promoted to a market town in 1907, during which time he was named the town's first mayor and honorary citizen. In 1909 he received the Golden Cross of Merit with the crown from Emperor Franz Joseph .

Others

In 1885 Moroder co-founded the Val Gardena section of the German-Austrian Alpine Club (DÖAV). As a corresponding member of the DÖAV, he supported the alpine and tourist development of Val Gardena. In 1895/96, thanks also to his energetic efforts and support, the hospice at the Gardena Pass was opened up; he served for several years as president of the hospice consortium.

Franz Moroder was one of the main promoters of the Ladin language with Archangelus Lardschneider , Josef Runggaldier and his nephew Wilhelm Moroder-Lusenberg. In several writings and leaflets he campaigned for the preservation of the Ladin language.
