Franz Pflugradt

Friedrich Ludwig Franz Pflugradt (born January 19, 1861 in Peenwerder / Demmin , † February 16, 1946 in Zingst ) was a German landscape painter.

Life

The son of a farmer was also initially active in this profession. Only at the age of 27 did he begin to study at the Berlin Art Academy on the advice of his uncle, the Berlin painter Gustav Pflugradt (1828–1908) . Here he attended the landscape class with Eugen Bracht and Max Koner . After that he worked as a freelancer in Berlin for some time. From 1910 he lived in Stralsund , study trips took him several times to Scandinavia.

He regularly spent the summer months on the Darss and Zingst as well as on the islands of Hiddensee and Rügen . He was the painter of the landscape of Western Pomerania . His main motifs came from the local nature, but also views of cities and individual buildings, preferably Stralsund and other cities in the region, were part of his work. Around 1920 the painting "Stralsund von der Seeseite" was created, in which the painter applied the colors not only with a brush, but also with a spatula and wooden sticks, thus achieving an atmospheric, "impressionistic" effect. Until the Great Depression, he found numerous buyers for his work, but was increasingly forgotten, so that he died lonely and impoverished. It was not until 1952 and 1975 that the Stralsund Cultural History Museum acquired 15 oil paintings and one watercolor from private ownership, including landscapes of the Pomeranian coastal and island region, Norwegian mountain views, hunting scenes and cityscapes.

The Hanseatic city of Stralsund named Franz-Pflugradt-Straße after the painter. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the painter's death, the city's cultural history museum honored him with a special exhibition in 1997. The Zingst Museum showed another special exhibition in 2017.

Incidentally, Franz Pflugradt's painterly roots went back even further than his uncle, his great-great-uncle was Caspar David Friedrich .

“He took his motifs from the local landscape: forest corners, island landscapes, coastal views, river banks, farms in moods of the year and the time of day. With rich, often darker colors and strong, lively style, he designed them into painterly forms.
The immediate visual experience should be felt. "
