Franz Heinrich Wilhelm Poppe (born March 24, 1834 in Neusüdende ( Rastede ), † September 13, 1915 in Oldenburg ) was a German teacher, school principal, writer, local poet and editor.

Life

Franz Poppe was born near Rastede as the son of a teacher and a daughter of the sculptor Franz Högl (1769-1859) from Warsaw . He spent his youth in Beckhausen , attended the teachers' college in Oldenburg from 1849 and worked as an assistant teacher in Stuhr from 1851 to 1853 . In 1854 he was employed as a teacher in Zwischenahn , a year later he came to Bardenfleth . In 1857 Poppe was transferred to Sande and in 1859 married Johanna Lüerßen from Bardenfleth.

In May 1862 Poppe became the main teacher in Bürgerfelde near Oldenburg. He worked there for fifteen years and was then appointed to the city schools in Frankfurt am Main . In 1880 he returned to Oldenburg, became a main teacher at the Haarentorschule and in 1891 retired early.

Activity as a writer

In addition to his professional activity, Poppe became known as a writer and poet. He wrote about 25 books, numerous poems, songs and stories that appeared in anthologies, newspapers, calendars and weekly papers. Among other things, Poppe took his subjects from the peculiarities of his home landscape and its inhabitants, which he put down in both Low German and High German . His lyrical work includes three volumes of Low German poems (published in 1867, 1879 and 1908) and two other collections (1869 and 1897). His essays appeared widely and were partly included in the anthology Between Ems and Weser , published in 1888 . Country and people in Oldenburg and East Frisia summarized.

His most popular writings were Poppe's Jan and Hinnerk stories, which were printed in the news for town and country and appeared in three edited volumes between 1901 and 1909. He also wrote a family novel about his grandfather, which appeared in 1911 with the title Franz Anton Högl from Warsaw, Sculptor and which also contained descriptions of the Oldenburg French period and the Biedermeier period in Oldenburg.

In addition, Poppe wrote a number of school books. For religious instruction he wrote the history of the kingdom of God in 1883 , which was published in twenty-one editions by 1913. Other important school books were the German language school (1893) and songs for school and home . Poppe's books mostly achieved several editions and many of his school books were in use in schools in the Oldenburger Land for decades.

As editor of various newspapers and magazines, Poppe edited the Oldenburger Schulblatt from 1868 to 1870 , for which he also wrote numerous articles on local history . From 1871 to 1882 he published the Oldenburg house calendar and from 1873 to 1881 the Oldenburg partner .

Franz Poppe was honored with the award of the Great Gold Medal for Science and Art of the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg . He was also made an honorary member and master of the Free German Hochstift in Frankfurt . The Heimatbund Niedersachsen made Poppe an honorary member on the occasion of an anniversary celebration organized for him in 1909.

In his poems and writings, Poppe always spoke about issues of the time. His political view was rooted in the bourgeois revolution of 1848 , but was also shaped by Greater German national wishes and hopes. For the war against France in 1870/71 he published the book Deutschlands Heldenkampf in 1872 , which is characterized by nationalistic enthusiasm. Although Poppe was one of the main representatives of Oldenburg High German and Low German native poetry of the second half of the 19th and first half of the 20th century and his works were well known at the time, they did not achieve any long-term importance.
