Franz Zeller Edler von Nahrungsmittelberg (born June 22, 1805 in Vienna ; † August 13, 1876 there ) was an Austrian military painter and lithographer .

Life

Zeller studied law and pursued a career as a judge , from which he did not retire until 1875, one year before his death. However, his job gave him enough time to deal with the fine arts, which he practiced autodidactically from an early age, both in his hometown of Vienna and on several official trips . In addition to depicting horses , he mainly painted the military genre as well as hunting and sports pictures. Occasionally he also painted landscapes . He mastered the techniques of oil painting , watercolors and gouaches and made numerous templates for lithographs . Zeller used a smooth, very careful painting style that took into account every detail.

In the years 1834 and 1863, Zeller von Bäumenberg exhibited his works at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts and in the 1860s he painted a total of 35 horse portraits for the imperial family . His works can be found in the collections of well-known museums, including those of the Wien Museum and the Army History Museum .
