Franz de Paula Ulrich III. Prince Kinsky von Wchinitz and Tettau (born June 23, 1726 in Slonitz in the Kingdom of Bohemia , † December 19, 1792 in Prague ) was a nobleman and imperial field marshal in the Austrian army.

Youth and military career

Franz de Paula Ulrich Johann Nepomuk Joseph Wenzel Gabriel von Kinsky was the third son of the diplomat Philipp Joseph Graf Kinsky and his wife Marie Karoline Countess von Martinitz . Following his father's wishes, after completing his studies, he initially entered the civil service and worked with the judicial authority with the title of court counselor.

After this time Franz de Paula followed his inner inclinations and applied for the army. On February 10, 1754 he entered the Colloredo regiment and was promoted to colonel in this regiment a year later (1755) . He successfully took part in the battles of the Seven Years' War (1756 in the Battle of Lobositz and 1757 in the victorious Battle of Kolin ). In the battle of Kolin he commanded the Botta infantry regiment and was seriously wounded in battle. Because of his bravery and military merits, Franz de Paula was awarded the Knight's Cross of the newly founded Order of Maria Theresa on March 7, 1758 , and was appointed Field Marshal a year later . Hardly recovered from his wounding, he took part in the battle of Hochkirch , which was victorious for Austria on October 14, 1758 , in which he distinguished himself through particular bravery. In 1759 the prince was promoted to field marshal lieutenant and employed in the field artillery. In 1765 he was given the command of the 36th Infantry Regiment . after that he made a steep military career: in 1766 he was appointed General Feldzeugmeister. And in 1772, after the death of Joseph Wenzel Liechtenstein (* 1696, † 1772), General Director of the Artillery. For his great military services he was awarded the Order of the Golden Fleece by Maria Theresa in 1771 and on March 18, 1778 he received the title of Imperial Field Marshal from the Empress. Maria Theresa, like his father, valued him for his services. In 1779 Franz de Paula went into retirement and stayed mainly on his estates in Bohemia.

financial situation

After the death of his father († 1749) Franz de Paula inherited a considerable fortune in Central Bohemia with the center of the rule Bohemian Kamnitz , which had belonged to the Kinskys since 1614. During his military career he managed to increase the family fortune considerably. He bought houses in Vienna and Prague, bought some estates in Bohemia. The Kinsky Palace on Old Town Square in Prague was acquired by the family in 1768, and later it became the center of the Kinsky family. Franz de Paula also bought numerous goods in Zolldorf , Chotzen , and other areas of northern Bohemia . Franz de Paula died in Prague on December 19, 1792.

After his cousin Franz Joseph II. Reichsfürst Kinsky (* 1726, † 1752) died unexpectedly early, he also inherited the title of Reichsfürst (as Franz de Paula III. Reichsfürst Kinsky ) and a considerable allodial possession .

On September 12, 1749, Franz de Paula Maria Sidonia married Theresia von Hohenzollern-Hechingen (1729-1815), a daughter of Field Marshal Hermann Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Hechingen . The marriage had two sons:
