Franziska is a feminine given name and the feminine form of Franziskus , originally derived from the Franconian people . The root word "frank" means something like "free", see also Frank .

Franziska was a moderately popular first name in Germany as early as the late 19th century. Its popularity declined more and more towards the middle of the 20th century. In the seventies its distribution increased strongly, so that in the eighties it was among the ten most frequently given female first names several times. Since then, its popularity has declined again.
