action

Goldmarie, who has lost her father and mother, is sent to her aunt Berta in Blumenau. On the way, Marie meets a scissors grinder who takes her with his vehicle to the village, where the aunt and her daughter are already waiting for them. Marie has to start working in the house immediately and is bullied by Berta and her lazy daughter, who is also called Marie.

Shortly afterwards, the sovereign has the court marshal call a competition in which the person who can spin the most beautiful yarn is to be chosen. Goldmarie is therefore supposed to spin yarn day and night at the well in front of the house for the aunt's daughter so that she can become a princely court tailor . Marie injured herself on the spindle and the thread on the bobbin was saturated with her blood. When Marie wants to clean it in the well, the coil falls into it. The young girl anxiously confesses her mishap to her aunt, who insists that Marie bring the bobbin back up from the well. Marie climbs down on a golden ladder that suddenly protrudes from the well and enters Frau Holle's realm. There she fulfills the request of an apple tree to shake it and the loaves in the oven to take them out. Frau Holle has observed them, receives them in their castle and asks them to come into their service. Marie helps her make the weather, lets it rain, snow, the sun shine and the wind blow.

When the young girl gets homesick, she is allowed back into the world. As a reward for her services, she is showered with gold, so that her clothes are made of pure gold, and her spool, now also made of gold, is returned with a fine silver thread.

When she is back in her world, she is received with curiosity. Berta's daughter should now come to such wealth. Deliberately injuring herself on the spindle, she throws the spool into the well and descends on the golden ladder. In Frau Holle's realm, she refuses to shake the apple tree and take the bread out of the oven. When Ms. Holle arrives, she is instructed in her duties. But she is too lazy and does her job so dissolute that the weather is completely mixed up. When she is released by Frau Holle and demands her reward, she is showered with bad luck.

After she is back home, the sovereign comes with the court marshal in a carriage to the village to look at the spun yarn. But all shown coils will be discarded. Pechmarie also shows her pitch-covered coil and the court marshal throws it away in disgust. Finally, Goldmarie presented her golden bobbin with the silver thread and was appointed princely court tailor . She gets into the carriage, but insists that her aunt and unlucky marie are allowed to come along to the princely castle.
