Fred Bandekow (born December 13, 1934 in Berlin ; † August 12, 2016 in Heide ) was a German painter of Fantastic Realism .

Life

Bandekov's mother suffered from open tuberculosis , which is why he was raised with a foster family . When he was three years old, his mother kidnapped him and hid him. The custody was his grandmother, with whom he then grew up. He met his father by chance at the age of 14 through a conversation with another person who later turned out to be his half-sister.

After attending elementary school , he did an apprenticeship as a metalworker. He broke off a subsequent training as a graphic designer at the Akademie für Werkkunst und Mode in Berlin, a predecessor institution of the Berlin University of the Arts .

As a painter Bandekow was self-taught .

Bandekow took part in the “Open Studio Day” in Eiderstedt .

painting

At school, Fred Bandekow stood out for his talent for drawing. At the beginning of his career, naturalism with its role model Caspar David Friedrich was in the foreground. Then he discovered Cubism , until he was inspired by Max Ernst , Salvador Dalí and René Magritte in Surrealism . After more than 60 years, Fred Bandekow paints in the style of fantastic realism . Here Rudolf Hausner and Ernst Fuchs were the most important artists for Bandekow. Even during his training as a graphic designer, Fred Bandekow produced linocut posters. This then brought the artist to the technique of woodcut , which he practiced since his studies.

Fred Bandekow used the technique of layer glaze like the masters of modern times. Up to twelve glazes on top of each other produce the luminosity and transparency. A tempera background (egg or casein) or grisaille technique often serves as the basis . Bandekow preferred mineral powder paints “Stone Colors”, drying oils, balms, resins and wax as painting medium.
