Fred Ihrt (1974)

Fred Ihrt (born June 16, 1918 in Pforzheim ; † April 30, 2005 in Hamburg ) was a German press photographer .

Life

From 1948 to 1951 Ihrt worked for the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung in Heidelberg . In 1955, Ihrt photographed Soraya Esfandiary Bakhtiari on her visit to Germany for Quick magazine .

In 1957, on the recommendation of Rolf Gillhausen , Gerd Bucerius took on the editorial team of Stern magazine . In 1961, Ihrt photographed Vera Brühne and her daughter and in 1962 those affected by the Spiegel affair for Stern. In 1967, during the Greek military dictatorship , Ihrt took a Piper PA-28 from Athens to Brindisi . While flying over Gyaros , he photographed the internment camp of the Greek colonels there. For another photo with the theme of the Greek military regime, he received the recognized "World Press Photo" photo award in the same year.

On October 17, 1973, Ihrt was accompanied in the Yom Kippur War by his colleague Nicholas Tomalin, who was killed on the Golan Heights .

In 1979 Ihrt took photos in a Russian Orthodox church in the Soviet Union , which earned him another prize - this time a third place - in the "World Press Photo" competition.

Awards

  • 1967 1st place in World Press Photo for photos relating to prisoners of the Greek military dictatorship
  • 1979 3rd place in World Press Photo for a series of photos in a Russian Orthodox Church in the Soviet Union
