Fred Kelemen (* 1964 in Berlin ) is a German director , author and cameraman .

Life

Fred Kelemen was born in West Berlin. He studied painting , music , philosophy , religion and theater studies . He then worked as an assistant director . From 1989 he studied camera and directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin .

He turned as a director, among other films Kalyi (1993), fatal (English title Fate , 1994), Frost (1997/98), the West (English title Nightfall , 1999), glow (AKA krisana , English title Fallen , 2005), Sarajevo Songs of Woe (2016).

He holds masterclasses and is visiting professor at various national and international film schools and universities (German Film and Television Academy Berlin, University of Visual Arts, Tel Aviv University , Latvian Culture Academy Riga, Universidad de Chile , Kidderminster College, Center for Cinematographic Studies of Catalonia, Thammasat -Universität , Harvard University , École des Beaux-Arts Lyon, France), Saar College of Fine Arts in Saarbrücken / Germany.

As a cameraman he shot the films Esau (2018) by Russian director Pavel Lungin , Sukariot , (English title Sweets , 2013) by Israeli director Joseph Pitchhadze , Journey to the Plain (1995), The Man from London (2005-2007) , The Turin Horse (A torinói ló, 2008–2011) by the Hungarian director Béla Tarr , The Visible and the Invisible (2006) by the German director Rudolf Thome and Stone Time Touch (2005) by the Canadian-Armenian director Gariné Torossian . He worked with the Argentine director Héctor Faver on his film Invocación (2000).

Retrospectives of his films are z. B. in the Tate Modern in London, the Anthology Film Archives in New York, the National Film Theater in Budapest or in the Cineteca Nacional in Mexico City .

As a theater director he worked at the Volksbühne Berlin (Prater) ( Desire , 2001), at the Sophiensælen in Berlin ( Stammheim rehearsals , 2002) and at the Schauspielhaus Hannover ( Fahrenheit 451 , 2002).

Fred Kelemen is a member of the German Film Academy , the European Film Academy , the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences / USA and the European Cultural Parliament.
