Frederick Burton
Frederick Wishard Burton (born October 20, 1871 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † October 23, 1957 in Woodland Hills , California ) was an American film and stage actor.
life and career
Former opera singer Frederick Burton was a successful stage actor as early as the 1900s, best known for his portrayal of rural Americans. Between 1904 and 1930 he played in a total of over 20 productions on Broadway . In 1913 he was seen in the play Reckless Age, produced by Cecil B. DeMille .
Frederick Burton made his film debut in 1914 and appeared regularly in silent films in the years that followed, including as Matthew Cuthbert in the silent film version of Anne of Green Gables alongside Mary Miles Minter . Burton made the transition to sound film without any problems. In the first years of the sound film era he was given full-blown supporting roles, for example alongside John Wayne in Raoul Walsh's western The Great Trek and in Josef von Sternberg's drama An American Tragedy (1931). From the mid-1930s, however, his film roles became noticeably smaller and he was often not mentioned in the credits. The tall, dignified-looking actor primarily embodied figures of authority such as doctors ( Journey of No Return ), judges ( Blind Fury ), politicians ( Theodora Goes Wild ) or pastors ( Such a Papa ). In 1947 he retired from acting after around 125 films.
Frederick Burton died in 1957, three days after his 86th birthday, leaving behind his second wife, Jessie. He was buried in the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in North Hollywood .
