Frederick Charles Stahr (born June 9, 1876 in Manhattan , † March 9, 1946 in Stapleton , Staten Island ) was an American painter who was best known for the murals in the Staten Island Borough Hall .

Life

Stahr spent his youth in Staten Island. He studied at the National Academy of Design and won the Lazarus Prize , a four-year art course at the American Academy in Rome .

After this art education he received numerous works as a wall painter. For example, he painted for the United States Treasury Department and the History of Manhattan in the Manhattan Hotel . Stahr later created the paintings in the first seat of the Metropolitan Opera in the Metropolitan Opera House on Broadway . While working on the Staten Island Borough Hall in 1904, Stahr presented his idea to the architects Carrère and Hastings to decorate the interior of the building with paintings from the history of the district. The proposal was accepted, but initially failed due to the financial aspect.

In order to bridge the gap, Stahr also studied at the Royal Academy of Rome and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1910 and 1911 before returning to New York . He moved to Staten Island again and was not able to continue work in Borough Hall until 1936, 32 years later, and decorate the building with the Evolution of Staten Island . This work took him two years and included eleven paintings throughout Borough Hall.

After this work he became an instructor at Columbia University and taught at the National Academy of Design . In addition, he gave private tuition and eventually died at the age of 70 of a heart condition in his home on Jackson Street in Stapleton.
