Frederik Hendrik Kreuger (born May 14, 1928 in Amsterdam ; † January 10, 2015 in Delft ) was a Dutch high-voltage scientist and inventor. He lived in Delft ( South Holland ) and was a professor emeritus at the Technical University of Delft . He published specialist literature, non-fiction books, detective novels and a biography as well as the catalog raisonné of the painter and art forger Han van Meegeren .

biography

Frederik H. Kreuger came from an old Amsterdam family. His maternal grandfather ran a small tobacco factory called “Het Wapen van Spanje” in the Weteringstraat near the Rijksmuseum .

In 2007 Frederik H. Kreuger wrote a book about this grandfather, his tobacco factory and the rapid development of science and technology in the Belle Époque at that time .

He attended a science high school in Haarlem , studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Delft, completed his engineering degree in 1954 and received his doctorate in 1961. From 1954 he worked as a high-voltage scientist in Sweden, England and the Netherlands. He later became managing director of the Nederlandse Kabelfabriek in Delft. In 1986 he received a professorship for high voltage at his alma mater in Delft. He worked there until his retirement in 1995.

Kreuger was the inventor of various high-voltage cable systems and measuring devices for partial discharges . These inventions, which have become common standards in high voltage technology, include:

  • elastomeric terminations in plastic high-voltage cables
  • elastomeric sleeves in plastic high-voltage cables (called bi-manchet)
  • the Kreuger bridge measuring system for the objective measurement of partial discharges
  • a discharge standard for measuring partial discharges.

His book Partial Discharge Detection was the standard work in his field for twenty-five years. He also published books on research management and mismanagement and the inadequacies of wind energy. His high-voltage laboratory in Delft became a research center for partial discharge measurements and for research into high- voltage direct current (100–1000  kV ) for use in X-ray machines , high-voltage direct current transmission , in cathode ray tubes and other applications.

Frederik H. Kreuger was the inventor of a system for the use of solar energy on the sea through large floating algae fields , which is used to produce biofuel . The Department “The Botanical Garden” of the Department of Biotechnology at the Technical University of Delft is overseeing this project in collaboration with several other departments of the Technical University.

He wrote a study on Jan Vermeer and on Vermeer's use of the camera obscura . He also published a study of the fixed point from which Vermeer could have painted his picture Street in Delft .

In 2001 he began researching the painter and art forger Han van Meegeren . He first published a novel about him with sketches about Jan Vermeer and a short biography about Han van Meegeren.

In his research he benefited from the fact that as a Dutchman he spoke Han van Meegeren's mother tongue and that he lived in the Netherlands when the art forger was active there during the Second World War . In the search for the primary sources, he evaluated the information from John Godley, 3rd Baron Kilbracken and the interviews by Marie Louise Doudart de la Grée with Han van Meegeren. He interviewed Han van Meegeren's last living relatives and the last living witnesses of his imprisonment, and he also discovered an unpublished biography of his son Jacques van Meegeren that contained new information about the father. He also found previously unknown photographs relating to Han van Meegeren and paintings that Han van Meegeren had signed with his own name; in addition, he discovered and identified some previously undetected forgeries of old masters that Han van Meegeren had made.

In 2004 he presented his research results and the images he discovered in his Dutch biography Han van Meegeren, Meestervervalser .

In 2006 the book De Arrestatie van een Meestervervalser followed , again in Dutch, in which he took into account the many reactions to his first biography.

Finally, in 2007, he published his English biography A New Vermeer. Life and Work of Han van Meegeren , which he named after the article A New Vermeer , in which Vermeer expert Abraham Bredius described Han van Meegeren's Emmaus fake in 1937 as the best painting by Jan Vermeer he had ever seen .

From 2010 on he published the English catalog raisonné by Han van Meegeren with a lot of background information. The fourth revised edition of the catalog raisonné appeared in 2013 under the title Han van Meegeren Revisited. His Art & a List of his Works.

Frederik H. Kreuger played the first violin in the amateur orchestra for gypsy music called Siperkov Ensemble . He wrote an essay about the creation and experience of this music and published it in 1996 in Dutch.

On January 10, 2015, the Dutch evening paper NRC Handelsblad announced that Frederik Hendrik Kreuger had died on January 10, 2015 at the age of 86 in Delft .

literature

Frederik H. Kreuger has written numerous publications for Cigré ( Conseil International des Grands Réseaux Électrique ), for IEEE ( Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers ) and for other scientific journals.
