Östberg, who started for the Falun-Borlänge SK, ran internationally for the first time at the Junior World Ski Championships in 1997 in Canmore . There he took 19th place over 10 km classic and sixth place with the relay. In the following year he achieved 18th place over 30 km classic and 14th place over 10 km freestyle at the Junior World Ski Championships in Pontresina . He had his debut in the World Cup in March 1998 in Falun , which he finished with his brother Mikael in fourth place in the team sprint. At the 1999 Junior World Ski Championships in Saalfelden , he won the silver medal with the relay. In November 1999 he completed his first individual race in the World Cup in Kiruna , which he finished classically in 70th place over 10 km. He ran his first race in the Continental Cup in Orsa in December 2000 and finished 12th over 15 km classic.
