Byström, who started for Sollefteå SK until 2014 and has been with Orsa SK since then , had his first international success at the 2001 Junior World Ski Championships in Karpacz . There he won the bronze medal in the sprint. He repeated this success the following year at the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in Schonach in the Black Forest and at the unofficial U23 World Championships in 2003 in Valdidentro . He made his debut in the Cross-Country World Cup in March 2003 in Borlänge , which he finished in 57th place in the sprint. In the 2004/05 season he took his first and only victory in the Scandinavian Cup in the sprint in Lapinlahti and at the end of the season he finished 15th in the overall standings. In December 2004 he came in the sprint in Asiago with the 25th place for the first time in the World Cup in the points. The following month he won the silver medal in the sprint at the unofficial U23 World Championships in 2005 in Oberstdorf . At the beginning of January 2008 he was fourth over 50 km classic at the Vasaloppet China and second in the sprint at the Far East Cup in Changchun . His 13th and so far last World Cup race he ran in November 2009 in Kuusamo , which he finished in 24th place in the sprint. This was his best result in the individual World Cup. Since 2010 he has mainly participated in competitions of the Worldloppet Cup and the Ski Classics . His best result so far was fourth place in January 2011 at the Dolomitenlauf .
Byström has also been participating in FIS races since 2001 . He has had four wins so far. In Swedish championships he won in 2009 and 2011 together with Robin Bryntesson in the team sprint.
