Independent winegrowers in South Tyrol

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Independent winegrowers South Tyrol , or FWS for short , is a regional winegrowers' association in South Tyrol . The members of the association are family wineries and self-made wine cellars with bottlings from the South Tyrolean wine-growing region . The FWS are not a cooperative of winemakers (joint wine marketing), but an association of self-marketing winemakers, i. H. the own wine is sold in each case. The aim of the association is to promote traditional viticulture and the South Tyrolean wine culture, as well as to represent and support the self-marketing agricultural wine-growing businesses in South Tyrol. This applies above all to the work in wine industry committees, advising members on wine-related issues and organizing joint presentations, training trips, etc.

history

The cellar at the Weinhof has been the traditional form of wine production in South Tyrol for over 2000 years and flourished in the late Middle Ages and the Habsburg era. Due to the activities of the wine trading families since the 19th century and the winery cooperatives since the beginning of the 20th century, many winegrowers have given up the pressing and sale of their own wine.

An exception was made by wine growers in and around St. Magdalena , as well as a few in Überetsch , in the Burggrafenamt and near Brixen . After the collapse of the Vernatsch sales market and the focus on the production of quality wines in the late 1980s, more farmers have started to cellar and market their wines themselves.

In the 1990s, many of today's independent wine growers used the services of the wine association. Its managing director Georg Stoffner (1994–2001) was decisive in developing the founding idea of the independent wine growers in South Tyrol, which developed in 1998. The self-marketing winegrowers who have not yet appeared with their own association should have their own interest group.

The association, in Italian "Vignaioli dell'Alto Adige", was founded on May 5th, 1999 in Bolzano by 12 South Tyrolean winegrowers. Franz von Pfeil (Kränzelhof in Tscherms) became president for the first two legislatures of three years.

The association became a member of the "South Tyrolean Wine Association", the interest group of the private wine industry in South Tyrol with the support of the then board. At the end of 1999 the association already had 49 members. During these years, the association tried above all to be perceived as a group. With the 1st "Vinea Tirolensis" on September 4, 2000, the association's annual wine presentation was launched, which has been taking place annually in South Tyrol ever since. On the occasion of the 3rd Vinea Tirolensis, on September 2nd, 2002, the first edition of the "Map of the Wineries" was presented, a practical map of South Tyrol on which the 60 FWS member companies at that time are drawn and which contains all the important information about the members.

In 2003, the association opened its own office in the Datumhof in Siebeneich near Terlan , which was led by its first full-time director, Paul Göller. Since then, all services (advice, register management, etc.) that were previously handled by the South Tyrolean Wine Association have been offered by the company itself. In October 2003 the first joint presentation outside of South Tyrol was carried out in Rome . The association was included for the first time in the drafting of the South Tyrolean Wine Promotion Regulations 2004-2006 as an independent winery representative in the South Tyrolean Wine Promotion Fund and received voting rights.

Christian Rottensteiner took over the management as director on October 1st, 2004. In 2005 Josephus Mayr (Unterganzner estate in Bozen) took over the chairmanship of two legislatures and thus until 2011. At the 6th Vinea Tirolensis 2005 in the Kurhaus in Merano , the Palatinate with 17 wineries VDP Pfalz was present as the guest country . In February 2006, the first event in Germany was held in Munich . At the 8th Vinea Tirolensis 2007, the Vinea Wachau came as a guest country with 8 companies. The association FWS, together with the Aostans and Piedmontese, is a founding member of the Association of Independent Winegrowers of Italy (FIVI - Federazione Italiana Vignaioli Indipendenti), which was founded on July 29, 2008 in Colorno near Parma with over 500 members. FWS Vice President Peter Dipoli also becomes FIVI Vice President. In April 2009 the FWS becomes a member of the European Confederation of Independent Winegrowers CEVI (European Confederation of Independent Winegrowers) through the national association FIVI

Peter Robatscher took over the management in 2010. In 2011 Michael Goëss-Enzenberg (Manincor in Kaltern) became President for two legislatures. As part of the South Tyrol Hall at Vinitaly in Verona, the association annually organizes a stand where members alternate to present themselves. At the end of the year, a number of members always take part in the "Wine Market of Italian Wine Growers" in the Piacenza Expo. In 2017 Hannes Baumgartner (Strasserhof in Neustift near Vahrn) became chairman. The increased cooperation with the Trentino winegrowers led u. a. in May 2019 for a joint event "Berg-Winzer" in Trento. The 20th Vinea Tirolensis was organized within the Hotel 2019 (Bozner Messe); 75 members took part with over 350 wines.

Current information about the association

100 agricultural wine-growing businesses are organized in the association in 2019, they come from all of South Tyrol's wine-growing regions. The members work around 6% of the South Tyrolean vineyards.

The association offers member support through circulars, legal and technical advice. He has been integrated into the national wine industry committees since 2004 and has been working in the newly founded "South Tyrolean Wine" consortium since 2008, which has taken over the management of South Tyrolean wine advertising . In addition, there is good cooperation with the Laimburg experimental center and the other institutions that are important for viticulture. The most important public activities are joint wine presentations such as the Vinea Tirolensis and the regular publication of a winery guide.
