Freud Marx Engels & Jung , FMEJ for short , were a Finnish rock and country band that existed from 1984 to 2017. The only permanent members were singer Pekka Myllykoski and guitarist Arto Pajukallio.

Band history

Freud Marx Engels & Jung were founded in 1984 in Seinäjoki . The singer Pekka "Freak Out" Myllykoski and the guitarist Arto "Pilli" Pajukallio met at the Provinssirock -Festival and started the band. The two of them remained the heads of the band until the end, the other members often changed, mostly Freud Marx Engels & Jung were five with two guitars, bass guitar and drums as instruments. The other three founding members were Ari Väänänen, Mikko Saarela and Heikki Hynynen, who had left the band after a few years. Other well-known, long-term members included bassist Jussi Kinnunen, who also played in bands such as Wigwam and Los Bastardos Finlandeses , drummer Juha Sivonen and guitarist Pekka Virtanen, who was also active with the Leningrad Cowboys and the Sleepy Sleepers .

The band's preferred style of music was country , in particular they had set themselves the goal of spreading outlaw country in Finland and in Finnish. In the course of time, however, they also adapted other styles of music and developed further. They covered numerous songs and translated them from English, for example by Johnny Cash , Hank Williams and Don Williams , but also by Bob Dylan , the Rolling Stones and Black Sabbath . The band name was an allusion to Sigmund Freud , Karl Marx , Friedrich Engels and Carl Gustav Jung , but it was not associated with a political or socially critical message. Rather, many of the songs were about alcohol and drinking. However, alcohol problems also played a role in the band's history and led, among other things, to a longer break.

In 1985 Freud Marx Engels & Jung made their first appearances and in 1986 their first album Rintaan pistää, sukat haisee, enkä pidä Jeesuksesta was released . Albums continued to follow regularly until 1993, then the band took a break from 1994 to 1998, only to come back together again unchanged. After that the publications became rarer. In 2005 the last studio album Amerikkalaisia unelmia was released together with the rock musician Kari Peitsamo. The band sold around 100,000 albums in their career. Freud Marx Engels & Jung continued to exist, especially as a live band and celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2014, with a total of over 1000 performances. Singer Pekka Myllykoski was already aware of cancer at this time. He died on April 22, 2017 at the age of 57, after which the band announced their breakup. Myllykoski had also been the band's text writer and was a Green MP on Helsinki City Council from 1993 to 2004 .
