Girlfriends - Now it was a German soap opera . It was produced by UFA Serial Drama and ran from August 27, 2018 to April 12, 2019, Monday to Friday, in the afternoon program of the German private broadcaster RTL . After that, reruns were shown on the same slot until the end of June 2019.

The focus is on four women, Tina, Kaya, Nadine and Heike, who have been friends with each other since childhood. Single mother Tina was betrayed by her husband and eventually abandoned for his affair and begins to reorganize her life. During an evening with her friends, she meets Christian and there is a lot of spark between them, so that they come together later. Kaya, on the other hand, has been happily married to her husband for 20 years and plays the role of a structured housewife before learning of Dirk's company about the financial crisis. As a result of a short-circuit reaction, she leases a nail salon. Nadine is the cheerful person in the group and is eagerly awaiting the long-awaited proposal from her friend Klaus. When he is ready, she finds her maid of honor in Heike and has been planning her wedding ever since. Finally, there is the successful bank employee Heike, who privately relies on non-binding affairs and, despite her direct comments, always stands up for her friends.

Various media drew comparisons with Sex and the City , including the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger and the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung . The series was shot in Grevenbroich on real locations and not in the studio.
Like the failed series Ahornallee from 2007, the program was an attempt by RTL to establish a second daily soap next to Unter Uns in the afternoon program .
The audience ratings for the series were unsatisfactory for the station from the start. After the end of the first season - unusual for a daily series - not directly followed by new episodes. Instead, repeats of older episodes were shown on the same slot. The broadcaster initially left it open as to whether there would be another season, but it was announced at the end of May 2019 that the new daily series Herz über Kopf will be shown on the previous slot of Freundinnen from autumn 2019 . After the audience ratings for the repeats fell even further, the station stopped broadcasting at the end of June 2019 and announced on July 2, 2019 that there would be no further season.
Crossover
Stefan Bockelmann's role Malte Winter continued to tell a character who had previously appeared in the main cast of the series Unter Uns for 16 years .
