Fricklesome Amsel is a German folk music band from Heiligenhaus ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) founded in 1998, playing folk from Ireland , Scotland , England , the USA and Canada . The group performs at folk festivals and cultural festivals all over northern Germany - from North Rhine-Westphalia ( Wuppertal , Ratingen , Düsseldorf , Rheine ), where it is at home, to Rinteln and Hanover ( Lower Saxony ), Bremen and Itzehoe ( Schleswig-Holstein ) . The band has appeared on international stages in England , Scotland , Ireland and Denmark .
The band combines music and literature in their special program "Postcards from Ireland ", in which music and literary texts by Heinrich Böll , Robert Burns , Roddy Doyle , James Joyce , Flann O'Brian and others alternate. A similar concept can be found in the Christmas programs. Here it is Christmas music from English-speaking countries and texts about Christmas customs from all over the world, which are mostly performed in churches.
The name of the band can be traced back to a recurring text uncertainty of a band member during the first concerts. The Irish song "Black Velvet Band" speaks of a "Frolicsome Damsel", a fun-loving lady. A twist in the text led to the words Fricklesome Amsel, where "Fricklesome" is simply a fantasy word. The blackbird stands for the well-known, native songbird , better known as the blackbird in English-speaking countries .
The social aspect is an important component in the work of the band. The musicians played benefit concerts for Bread for the World , Misereor , a hospital project in India and various social projects in Heiligenhaus . In their home town of Heiligenhaus they are actively involved in twinning with the cities of Mansfield , Meaux and Zwönitz and are part of the concept for the Ruhr 2010 Capital of Culture . In primary schools they took care of introducing children to handmade music in workshops.
