history

The Fridtjof-Nansen-Park is located on the area of a former quarry, in which Atzgersdorfer sandstone was mined until 1956 . The area then served as a landfill . In the course of the increasingly dense settlement in the area, it was abandoned in 1963 and the park was created. In the years 1998 to 2000 systems for the collection of seepage water and for an active gas collection were built in order to protect the groundwater and the adjacent residential buildings. The park was named after the Norwegian zoologist , polar researcher , diplomat and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Wedel-Jarlsberg Nansen (* 1861; † 1930).
