The Valduna Cemetery (also: Valdunafriedhof ) is located in the market town of Rankweil in Vorarlberg , Austria . It is a listed building .

history

The Valduna cemetery was created in 1876 because other cemeteries in Rankweil had become too small.

At the beginning of 1946 Jakob Ammann (member of the Rankweil community committee) suggested that grave marks should be erected on the graves of the Russians who had died in the hospital. In mid-1946, these tombs were inaugurated in the presence of Russian and French officers .

With the exception of the part for children who died prematurely, the facility was shut down in 1998.

location

The cemetery is located in the cemetery parcel ( 520  m above sea level ), below the Egaten parcel , in the municipality of Rankweil and is about 500 meters as the crow flies from the Rankweil State Hospital and 2 km from the center of Rankweil. It is about 1.5 km as the crow flies to the center of Übersaxen and about 2.5 km to Göfis .

The Egartabächle passes about 20 meters northwest of the cemetery.

investment

The northwest-southeast-oriented system has a length of about 100 meters and a width of about 30 meters. The cemetery is divided into two parts by a chapel with arcades with large representations of the stations of the cross . The cemetery is surrounded by forest on two sides. The system was planned by master builder Friedrich von Schmidt from Vienna and implemented by architect Johann Caspar Wolff until 1876.

Arcades and stations of the cross

Under the arcades, which connect to the left and right of the chapel, there are resting places of spiritual sisters, pastors and, occasionally, employees of the hospital, who were buried here until 1961.

The stations of the cross, seven on each side, in the style of historicism , are located on the walls of the pointed arch arcades. They are to those whom Joseph von Führich (1800–1876) z. B. for the church on St. Lorenzberg in Prague , modeled after ( Führich-Kreuzweg ). The painter is unknown, it is believed that it could be Johann Kärle or Emmanuel Walch .

Cemetery of the unborn children

Collective burials of unborn children have been taking place here since 1973, currently twice a year as part of an interreligious church service. A memorial stone was erected in 1999 and the tombs were redesigned in 2008–2009.

Wehrmacht cemetery

In the front part of the complex is the Wehrmacht cemetery , in which several hundred members of the German Wehrmacht and their allies are said to be buried. There are wrought iron crosses in 9 rows of 10 crosses each, each with one or two names. The name boards are numbered from 1 to 90. The majority of these people died of tuberculosis . This part was redeveloped in 1993 under the management of the Black Cross , which is also responsible for maintenance and preservation.

Russian part

The Russian part of the facility was designed for soldiers and prisoners of war of the Red Army . There are said to be between 24 and 43 dead. In 1965, 20 dead from other cemeteries in Vorarlberg were exhumed and buried here. It is the only closed cemetery for former members of the Soviet armed forces in Vorarlberg. Care and maintenance are carried out by the Black Cross. At the beginning there is a square stone obelisk on a pedestal, which is crowned by a Soviet star. Also on the front part of the complex (Wehrmachtsfriedhof) there are graves of Russian citizens in the area of the soldiers' graves .

In the area of the Russian part of the cemetery complex, a memorial stone was inaugurated in 1996 for members of the Wehrmacht who died in Russia .
