Location of Friedrich-August-Hütte in Lower Saxony

Friedrich-August-Hütte (FAH) is a district of the Lower Saxon town of Nordenham in the northeast of the Wesermarsch district at the mouth of the Weser .

The district is named after Grand Duke Friedrich August von Oldenburg and a zinc and lead works of the same name.

history

In 1906 the Metallwerke Unterweser AG (Friedrich-August-Hütte) were founded in order to build a zinc and lead processing factory on the banks of the Weser in the southern part of the former municipality of Blexen near the municipality of Atens / Nordenham. There was also a subsidiary , Superphosphat AG , in order to obtain artificial fertilizers from the sulfur phosphates . Until the beginning of the First World War , workers' settlements were built near the factory premises, from which the Friedrich-August-Hütte district developed.

In 1933 the place was incorporated into the city of Nordenham together with the municipality of Blexen. In 1936, FAH was connected to the gas network together with Einswarden and Blexersande.

In 1957, the Friedrich-August-Hütte elementary school was built on Margarethenstrasse , and extensions followed in 1968, 1970 and 1975.

In 1966 the Evangelical Lutheran Pauluskirche was built.

The zinc and lead smelter changed hands several times. From 1988 to 2002 it was owned by the French company Metaleurop . The zinc smelter was taken over by Xstrata in 2002 . Today it produces 150,000 tons of zinc annually and has 306 employees. The lead smelter is operated by Weser-Metall GmbH , produces around 100,000 t of lead and has around 300 employees.
