The Friedrich is a former ferry that is preserved in Bremen as a traditional ship .

history

The ship was built in the years 1879/1880 as a steamship for J. H. Grell's steam ferry at the Reiherstieg Schiffswerfte & Maschinenfabrik in Hamburg . It was in 1880 when South Hamburg on the Elbe as a ferry for the transport of shipyard -workers from Baumwall to Steinwerder used. The ship also served as a fireboat , as can be seen from the fire-fighting equipment that is still on board today.

The Süd-Hamburg was powered by a two-cylinder steam engine with an output of 160  hp . For the lighting, the ship had a coal bunker with a capacity of eight tons of hard coal.

In January 1889 the ship was sold to the Hafendampfschiffahrt-Actiengesellschaft (HDAG, later HADAG) and continued to be used as a ferry in the port under the name of Süd-Hamburg .

In 1918 the Bremen shipowner Bernhard Wilhelm Riedemann (the son of Wilhelm Anton Riedemann ) bought the ship and renamed it North Bremen . It was now used on the Weser as a ferry for shipyard and port workers . In 1925, Riedemann had the ship rebuilt at his shipyard at Hohentorshafen and equipped with the characteristic second deck , which was initially open on the sides. The ship has now been renamed Friedrich and mainly used for harbor tours in Bremen.

In 1932 the ship was sold to the Otto W. A. Schreiber shipping company founded in 1926 . She had the open upper deck closed with windows and used the ship partly in the regular service between Bremen-Mitte and Bremen-Nord and partly for harbor tours. In 1939 the ship was launched . It survived the Second World War unharmed at a berth on the Mittelweser below the Baden mountains.

Between 1949 and 1951 the ship was converted into a motor ship at the Lühring shipyard in Brake . The steam engine of the vessel was determined by a used MWM - diesel engine replaced with an output of 180 hp. In 1963 the Friedrich was decommissioned by the Schreiber shipping company and moored as a floating workshop at the Martinian pier.

In order to save the ship, which is threatened with decay, the Bremen Society for the Preservation of the Great Harbor Tour MS Friedrich e.V. was founded in 1985 . V. , who took over the Friedrich from the Schreiber shipping company. In the following years the ship was restored. The main engine also had to be replaced after the overhauled old engine suffered a total loss in a test run in September 1990. In 1991 the machine was exchanged for a MWM diesel engine with an output of 200 hp. In 1994 the ship was temporarily berthed on the Weser below the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Bridge , since 2000 it has been - now fully restored - on a pontoon on the Schlachte between the Bürgermeister-Smidt-Bridge and the Teerhofbrücke . a. used for trips and events.
