Friedrich Adolf Philippi (born October 15, 1809 in Berlin , † August 29, 1882 in Rostock ) was a Lutheran theologian of Jewish origin.

Life

Philippi was the son of the wealthy Jewish banker Elias Philipp (born March 19, 1781 in Potsdam † 1846 in Berlin). From 1812 this is called Eduard Philippi.

Philippi was a friend of the Mendelssohn family . He received his education from 1822 at the Joachimsthal School in Berlin and studied philology in Berlin and Leipzig from 1827 . In 1829 he was baptized ( conversion ) in Leipzig . After receiving his doctorate in 1830 as Dr. phil. he became a teacher at a private school in Dresden and in 1833 at the Joachimsthalschen Gymnasium in Berlin. There he devoted himself to the study of theology under the influence of Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg .

In 1836 Philippi passed the theological exams and became a candidate for the ministry (cand. Rev. Min.). In 1837 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the theological faculty of the University of Berlin . He read about the New Testament.

In 1840 Philippi was appointed professor of theology at Dorpat University. He taught courses on the New Testament and systematic theology. In 1843 he received an honorary doctorate in theology from the University of Erlangen .

In 1851 Philippi was appointed professor for the New Testament at the University of Rostock . There he appeared against his colleague Michael Baumgarten in the Lutheran-Orthodox sense and obtained his impeachment. From 1858 he led a scientific feud against Johann Christian Konrad von Hofmann , who was a theology professor in Erlangen. Philippi is considered to be a representative of repristination theology and, along with Hengstenberg, was one of the most effective representatives of neo-Lutheranism .
