Friedrich Anton Serre
Friedrich Anton Serre (born July 28, 1789 in Bromberg ; † March 3, 1863 in Dresden ) was a German major and patron.
Life
Serre was a son of the Prussian Privy Councilor Johann Serre (1756-1827) and his wife Caroline Wilhelmine Richardi (1767-1836). He went to high school in Gdansk and then studied law at the Brandenburg University in Frankfurt . After completing his studies, Serre was a trainee lawyer in Glogau for three years until he reported on foot as a hunter in the 2nd Guards Regiment at the beginning of the wars of liberation and took part in the Battle of Großgörschen . When the fighting ended, Serre became an adjutant to the military governor of Saxony, General von Gaudy.
So Serre came to Dresden and got to know the daughter Friederike of the merchant Hammerdörfer, whom he married in 1817. He said goodbye and two years later bought the Maxen estate near Pirna. This and his Dresden house became a meeting point for artists and scientists such as Ludwig Tieck , Theodor Hell , Karl Gutzkow , Adolf Henselt , Hans Christian Andersen , Ottilie von Goethe , Clara Schumann , Robert Schumann , Johan Christian Clausen Dahl , Ernst Rietschel , Julius Hübner , Eduard Bendemann , Emil and Eduard Devrient . On a trip to Italy, the Serre couple met the sculptor Thorvaldsen , who was then a guest at Gut Maxen in 1842.
Serre founded an orphan colony in and around Maxen. Orphaned at an early age by the death of his parents, he took care of the artistic development of Carl August Riccius (1830–1893), who later became the choir director of the Dresden court opera . In order to support poor artists, he founded the Tiedge Foundation in 1841 and played a key role in the Schiller Foundation in 1855 .
Serre died of a heart attack after a long illness.
