Friedrich August Biener
Friedrich August Biener (born February 5, 1787 in Leipzig , † May 2, 1861 in Dresden ) was a German legal scholar . Biener was Professor of Law at the University of Berlin from 1810 to 1834 .
Life
His father Christian Gottlob Biener (1748-1828) was Professor of Law at the University of Leipzig and was appointed to the Saxon court and court judge. Friedrich August Biener attended the Nikolaischule in Leipzig and studied law at the Leipzig University and the University of Göttingen . 1804 doctorate he became a doctor of law and qualified as a professor at the University of Leipzig as a lecturer .
When the University of Berlin was founded in 1810, he was appointed full professor of law at its law faculty. After Gustav von Hugo , Georg Arnold Heise and Christian Gottlieb Haubold had refused an appointment to Berlin, Friedrich Carl von Savigny stood up for Biener, whom he recommended in a letter dated August 1810 to Georg Heinrich Ludwig Nicolovius . He praised him as a versatile lawyer with a very thorough approach. Biener announced lectures in feudal law and criminal law for the winter semester of 1810 . In the same year he was elected the first dean of the law faculty of the University of Berlin, an office he also held in the years 1814/15, 1818/19, 1822/23 and 1828/29. Over time, he expanded his seminars and also taught criminal procedural law and legal history . For his services he was given the character of a Privy Councilor in 1829 . Since 1832, hampered by illness in the exercise of his Magisterium, he settled in 1834 as emeritus .
In 1834 went to Dresden as a private citizen. He continued to write legal works and was active as a journalist. He died in Dresden on May 2, 1861 at the age of 74. His extensive library and part of his written estate came to the Leipzig University Library . He donated 87,000 thalers to an institution for the blind . In his honor, a street, Bienerstraße, was named in the Leipzig district of Neulindenau in 1908 .
