Friedrich Encke

Georg Friedrich Encke (born September 23, 1782 in Meyenburg , † March 26, 1852 in Eutin ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran clergyman and educator .

Life

Encke was born in Hamburg as the son of the archdeacon at the main church Sankt Jacobi , August Johann Michael Encke (1749–1795), in Meyenburg, where his father was a pastor at the time. Franz Encke (1791–1865) and August Encke (1794–1860) were his younger brothers, the teacher and head of a boys' school in Hamburg, Dorothea Encke (1780–1874), his sister.

Encke received his education at the teaching institute of Karl Friedrich Hipp (1763-1838), the learned school of the Johanneum and from 1801 at the academic high school in Hamburg. From Easter 1802 he studied Protestant theology at the University of Göttingen and received the scholarship from the will of Dr. Jungius .

After completing his studies, Encke returned to Hamburg and on November 13, 1807 became a candidate for the Ministry of Spiritual Affairs . In 1808 he became a deacon at the main church Sankt Katharinen , in 1810 a preacher at the Holy Spirit Church , at the Sankt Pankratius Church in Ochsenwerder and the main church Sankt Petri , in 1814 at the main church Sankt Nikolai and in 1815 at the Dreieinigkeitskirche in Allermöhe and the Orphanage Church . From 1810 to 1815 he was also, under the direction of Johann Gottfried Gurlitt (1754–1827), a collaborator at the learned school of the Johanneum.

In December 1815 he was called as a preacher at the St. Michaelis Church in Eutin, where he rose to senior pastor in 1833 and held this position until the end of his life in 1852.

Encke was married to Hedwig Picken (1788-1845) from Glückstadt .
