Friedrich Ernst August von Studnitz

Friedrich Ernst August von Studnitz (born February 16, 1796 in Grünberg in Silesia , † September 9, 1866 in Frankfurt an der Oder ) was a royal Prussian major general , most recently in command of the Torgau Fortress and an honorary citizen of the city of Torgau .

Life

His parents were Hans Ernst Sigismund von Studnitz (* September 17, 1792 - March 7, 1839) and his wife Helene Friederike Sophie von Schweinitz (* April 10, 1770; † May 18, 1838). His father was Colonel a. D. from the Dragoon Regiment No. 11 (Voss) as well as hereditary lord on Upper and Lower Peru.

He came to Berlin as a cadet on August 25, 1806 and was then transferred to the engineer corps on October 15, 1812 as a second lieutenant , which was sent to the Silesian pioneer company in Glatz. In 1813 he was at the fortified camp near Wartha and on February 6, 1814 he came from the square to the Torgau fortress as an engineer officer . But on October 1st, 1814, he was assigned to the General War School . During the summer campaign of 1815 he fought in the battles at Ligny and Belle Alliance . He was also at the sieges of Maubeuge, Landrecies, Philippeville - where he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class -, Marienburg, Rocroy and Givet. On March 20, 1815 he was transferred to the 7th mobile field pioneer company in Malmedy.

After the war, on December 16, 1816, he was transferred as a captain and company commander to the 2nd Company of the 4th Engineer Division in Thionville , and he also became a teacher at the division school there. On May 27, 1820 he came with a patent on May 3, 1816 as an engineer officer from the square to the Koblenz fortress . From there he came on April 13, 1823 as an engineer officer from the square to the Torgau fortress. On January 18, 1835 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class , and promoted to major on April 25, 1835. In the same year he took part in the great parade in Kalish. On April 18, 1837, he was then transferred as a commander to the Guards Pioneer Department . There he received the service cross in 1837 . In 1838 he received the Red Eagle Order 3rd Class with Ribbon and the Russian Order of St. Stanislaus 3rd Class , on June 27, 1838 he was appointed a member of the Examination Commission for Engineer Captain 2nd Class and Premier Lieutenant. On April 20, 1839 he was sent to Prague to erect the memorial for Field Marshal von Schwerin, who died near Prague in 1757 . He was then transferred to the 2nd fortress inspection as an interim inspector on March 25, 1841 and confirmed on January 13, 1842. On May 21, 1844, he was named lieutenant colonel by patent on March 30, 1844, and on March 27, 1847, he was made a colonel. During the March Revolution he was used in street fighting in Berlin. On November 16, 1850 he came back to Torgau, where he was entrusted with the management of the second commandant's business. On December 10, 1850, he was appointed the real commander of Torgau and was placed à la suite of the engineering corps. On January 18, 1857, he also received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, before he was called to the disposal of Major General with a pension on May 17, 1859 , and he received additional, lifelong support of 250 thalers annually. He died on September 9, 1866 in Frankfurt an der Oder.

The general was considered a capable engineer officer who made a name for himself as early as 1815. In Koblenz he built the city fortifications from 1816 to 1822. In his assessment in 1847, General Brese wrote : With much activity in business, this staff officer shows very valuable knowledge and experience in both branches of the corps. Easily oriented and with a lively temperament, he is quick and thorough in his work and with an never-failing zeal in service. His open, benevolent character, his dexterity in sociable relationships and his always honorable demeanor secure him the affection and respect of his peers. His household is still well ranked with numerous families. He is completely field service capable and suitable for future promotion in rank and charge.

He married Ottilie Johanna Ernestine von Keltsch and Riemberg on April 18, 1824 in Perschütz (* January 20, 1804 - February 27, 1885), a daughter of Ernst Gottlieb Sigmund von Keltsch (* June 27, 1772 - April 25, 1843) ), Lord of Skarsine and Knight of the Order of St. John. The couple had several children:
