Friedrich Hirth (comparator)
Friedrich Hirth (born July 25, 1878 in Vienna , † December 20, 1952 in Mainz ) was an Austrian Germanist , Romanist and comparativeist of Jewish descent with French nationality.
life and work
From 1901 to 1918 Hirth was a grammar school teacher in Vienna, Teschen , Gottschee and Prague . He received his doctorate in German studies under Jakob Minor in Vienna in 1916 with the thesis The type of cheated farmers . From 1919 to 1922 he lived in Paris . In view of the emergence of National Socialism , he emigrated to France at an early stage, where he published books about Gustav Stresemann and Adolf Hitler . From 1946 he was the first German professor of comparative literature at the University of Mainz , and from 1949 on an endowed chair of the French military government. Hirth was primarily a Germanist and Heine researcher , but also became a Romance and comparative literary scholar through the "Parisian" Heine and through his own change of nationality.
