He received private tuition and attended grammar school before he began studying philosophy and law at the University of Jena for two years in 1645 . His mother lacked funds after her husband died in 1640 at the age of 82. Friedrich Hondorff went to Copenhagen , "in order to be there as a German, in accordance with his hope of getting over good conditions" . When the hopes placed in the Danish city were not fulfilled, Hondorff turned to Rostock , where he stayed for two years and continued his studies at the university . He also married the widow Anne Krullin and went with her to Küstrin , where he worked as a lawyer for a while . On 15 August 1650 he was after a disputation the licentiate ( Licentiatum Juris ) awarded. Hondorff went back to Rostock to practice as a lawyer there, but returned to his hometown Halle in 1651 after he was unable to establish himself due to the large number of legal scholars in Rostock.

In 1657 Duke August von Sachsen-Weißenfels appointed him court counselor . Three years later, Hondorff obtained his doctorate and succeeded Jacob Unruhe Salzgraf der Saline zu Halle, an office which he held until his death. His first wife died on November 12, 1676, the couple had remained childless. This wife also died in 1680 without the marriage having resulted in any offspring. His third marriage was Hondorff on July 11, 1681 with Dorothee Sophie Strauchs († 1710), the daughter of an electoral Saxon secret council . Friedrich Hondorff's only child, Friedrich August ( Fridericum Augustinum ), was born on June 4, 1684 . On April 30, 1694, Friedrich Hondorff died at the age of 66 from the effects of kidney stones . Description of the Halle saltworks

Representation of the salt works (in: Johann Christoph von Dreyhaupt, Description of the Saalkreis , 1750)

In his function as salt count, Friedrich Hondorff wrote a description of the Halle saltworks in 1670 under the title The Saltz-Werck zu Halle in Saxony . The work contains both a description of the salt springs and the salt production, as well as a description of the ownership structure, the various offices and professions of the salt works as well as legal regulations. The presentation is completed by income statements, lists of officials and an extensive appendix. The appendix contains documents related to the salt springs.

The lawyer and historian Johann Christoph von Dreyhaupt (1699–1768) decided 78 years after the book's publication to add Hohndorff's remarks “because of rarity” in an updated and expanded form to the second volume of his work Description of the Saalkreis (1749/50).
