Friedrich Kähler , also Fritz Kähler (born June 5, 1873 in Klink , † November 27, 1942 in Laage ) was a German lawyer , mayor of the city of Laage, local poet and Low German playwright .

Life

Friedrich Kähler was born in Klink near Waren (Müritz) as the second of five sons of the estate owner Leopold Kähler. He attended high school in goods and studied from 1892 to 1896 in Heidelberg , Leipzig , Greifswald , Berlin and Rostock law . After the assessor exam (1899) and the legal clerkship at Waren and Rostock courts, he applied for the vacant position of the mayor of Laager in 1900. He was introduced to the office on April 2, 1900. Due to his cheerful, people-loving manner, Kähler soon enjoyed such a reputation among the citizens of Laager that they affectionately called him “Fritzing Mayor”. In 1925 he became an honorary citizen of the city. The Nazis stood Kahler somewhat reserved with. In 1936 the NSDAP forced the 63-year-old out of office prematurely because it wanted to create a supply post for SA man Paul Koop from Grevesmühlen . As a lawyer, Kähler continued to deal with legal issues. He died in 1942 and was buried in a grave of honor in the Laager cemetery.

Poetic work

Kähler first appeared as a local poet in 1905. The prose volume “Nige Kamellen. Römische un Dütsche ”contains humorous stories in the style of Fritz Reuters and is written in Low German. In particular, the quarrelsome stories "Dei Tetrowschen", "Hei" and "Snidergewarw" reveal a peculiar art of storytelling, which was in the tradition of the New Low German literature. Fritz Kähler maintained connections with the Waren folklorist Richard Wossidlo and participated in the recording of Mecklenburg folk traditions .

Friedrich Kähler gained real popularity as the author of Low German stage plays.

In addition, he wrote many articles in local publications such as "Ostmecklenburgische Heimat". The local history book “Truth and Poetry about Laage”, which was published, can be regarded as his “old work”. In addition to an outline of the city's history, it also contains poems and short stories that provide an interesting, sometimes humorous look at everyday life in a small Mecklenburg town.
