Friedrich Koester

Friedrich Burchard Köster (born July 30, 1791 in Loccum ; † November 16, 1878 in Stade ) was a Protestant theologian and university professor . Most recently he was General Superintendent of the General Diocese of Bremen-Verden in the Duchy of Bremen and Duchy of Verden .

Life

Köster spent his childhood in Osterode am Harz , where his father Rudolf Gottfried Köster was superintendent. He visited the school gate and from 1810 studied theology at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . After a temporary job as a private tutor, he became a repetent at the University of Göttingen in 1813. 1817 doctorate he became Dr. theol. In 1819 he became conventual and study director at the preacher's seminary in Loccum monastery .

In 1822 he was appointed full professor for practical theology at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . In 1833/34 he was its rector . She awarded him an honorary doctorate in theology. In Kiel he married Elise born in 1822 . Schlueter ; the marriage remained childless. Köster described his time in Kiel as the happiest of his life.

Tired of teaching, he gratefully accepted the offer in 1839 to succeed Georg Alexander Rupertis as consistorial advisor and general superintendent in Stade. Belonging to the theology of mediation , he tried to mediate between the opposing currents of the awakening movement and the Enlightenment that predominated in the Stader area . He was retired on April 25, 1860 . He died at the age of 87. His wife survived him by five years.

Köster brought out a number of theological writings. This included theoretical works such as Meletemata in Zachariae (1818), Immanuel, or Characteristics of the New Testament Miracle Tales (1821), The Book of Job and the Preacher of Solomon translated according to their strophic arrangement (1831) and explanations of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments from the classics , especially from Homer (1833). Other works were the result of his practical teaching activities, such as the history of the study of practical theology at the University of Kiel (1825) and the textbook of pastoral studies (1827).

In addition, Köster was also interested in history, which was reflected in a number of historical publications. In addition to the history of the Loccum Monastery (1822) and the history of the Royal Consistory of the Duchies of Bremen and Verden (1852), these include the antiquities, stories and legends of the Duchies of Bremen and Verden (1856). The founding of the Association for the History and Antiquities of the Duchies of Bremen and Verden and the State of Hadeln (today Stader History and Local History Association ) in Stade goes back to Köster . During his time in Kiel he was one of the founding members of the Society for Schleswig-Holstein History .
