Friedrich K. Wanek

Friedrich K. Wanek (born November 11, 1929 in Lugoj in Banat / Romania ; † April 13, 1991 in Mainz ) was a composer , arranger , educator and editor .

Life

Friedrich K. Wanek studied composition from 1948 to 1954 at the Musikhochschule in Bucharest with Paul Constantinescu , Marțian Negrea , Theodor Rogalski and Leon Klepper . From 1954 he was also editor of the magazine "Muzica" in Bucharest and member of the Romanian composers' association.

In 1958 he was banned from practicing his profession and was expelled from the composers' association. In 1962 he emigrated to Austria and worked there as a lecturer at Universal-Edition in Vienna. He later moved to Mainz, where he worked from 1966 to 1991 as a lecturer for contemporary music at Schott-Verlag . In addition, from 1980 to 1982 he was a lecturer for composition at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and from 1984 to 1991 he was the head of a composition class at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz. From 1982 to 1983 he was a scholarship holder of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry of Culture at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. He was married to the pianist and piano teacher Agathe Wanek for many years. Friedrich K. Wanek died on April 13, 1991 in Mainz. After his death, Hans Werner Henze created two concert arias for tenor and small orchestra (1991) in memoriam Friedrich K. Wanek [1929–1991] based on texts by Heinz von Cramer, which were premiered on July 28, 1991.

His work includes numerous chamber music works, many of which were composed at the specific suggestion of instrumentalists, as well as some orchestral works from the last years of his life. His style cannot be assigned to any particular direction, his works are mostly written in a free tonality, often combining contemporary elements with traditional ones.

He also created numerous arrangements by well-known composers such as Carl Orff , for whose Carmina Burana he created an arrangement authorized by the composer, as well as furnishings such as the Six Miniatures for Wind Ensemble by György Ligeti .
