Life

His father was the principal of a high school. Initially, Neubauer was raised and educated exclusively by his parents. At the age of eight he went to the pre-school of the Erfurt Realanstalt for a year , which prepared him for his subsequent visit to the local high school. He graduated from high school in 1878. In the following years he studied classical philology and history at the University of Halle (Saale) and finished this course in 1882 with a doctorate. In 1883 he passed the state examination (Latin, Greek, history, geography, French). He spent his probationary year at the " Latin secondary school of the Francke Foundations " in Halle and continued to work at this institution as a teacher and inspection teacher. He gave up the position and went to Rome for five years. In the period from 1885 to 1860 he tried to work as a tutor there, but was very ill at times.

After returning from Rome, he took up his previous position at the Latina in Halle and was also employed at Otto Frick's pension institution. In 1891 he married the daughter of Superintendent Pinckernelle and had three boys with her. From 1896 to 1903 he was the head of a boarding school in Halle and published the first history textbooks. In 1903 he went to Landsberg an der Warthe as a high school director , and in 1905 to Frankfurt am Main .

From 1905 to 1926 Neubauer was director of the Lessing-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main. He modernized the ancient language teaching, introduced philosophy as a subject in the Prima and encouraged the students to submit free papers that were considered in the Abitur.

He was a privy councilor and since 1904 a member of the Academy of Non-Profit Science in Erfurt . In the period from 1913 to 1923 he was the chairman, from 1924 the honorary chairman of the Association of German History Teachers . His multi-volume textbook on history was used by high schools all over Germany.

memories

Peter Kohnstamm , as his former student, mentions him in his biography: "The school director, privy councilor Dr. Friedrich Neubauer, author of" Neubauer's history text book "with predominantly German history, gathered the school community at the time of the Versailles treaty and told us about the injustices of this Dictation, listing in detail the thousands of different weapons, vehicles, warships, etc. that the "Tiger Clemenceau " had stolen from us, as well as Alsace-Lorraine and all the colonies , as well as pointing out the Polish corridor , the astronomical reparations claims and not to forget the " war guilt clause ".
