Friedrich Sauter , also Fritz Sauter (born May 23, 1930 in Vienna ; † April 18, 2020 ) was an Austrian chemist and emeritus university professor for organic chemistry at the Technical University of Vienna . His main research interests were organic synthesis, especially that of new heterocyclic systems in connection with pharmaceutical research , and organic-chemical archaeometry .

Live and act

Friedrich Sauter was born as the son of Anton and Margarete Sauter in Vienna , where he also attended school and the secondary school. From 1948 to 1957 he studied chemistry at the University of Vienna , where he specialized in the field of organic chemistry after completing his basic studies and carried out his dissertation on the synthesis of new phenothiazine derivatives under Otto Hromatka ; his doctorate as Dr. phil. took place in 1957. During his chemistry studies and his early assistant years, he also studied botany and zoology at the University of Vienna.

After working part-time as an assistant during the dissertation, Sauter was an assistant at the University of Vienna (1957–1963) and at the Technical University of Vienna (1963–1970). After several short study stays at the University of Salford , he received his habilitation in organic chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology in 1970 and there in 1973 he was also appointed associate professor. From 1973 until his retirement he was also head of the department for organic synthesis at the Institute for Organic Chemistry at the TH Vienna.

In 1978 he was appointed full professor for organic chemistry at the Vienna University of Technology and at the same time was appointed head of the Institute for Organic Chemistry (today Institute for Applied Synthetic Chemistry). In 1998 he retired and since then has been particularly concerned with archaeometric research and lecturing. Sauter died on April 18, 2020.

He was married to Susanne Sauter († 1998) since 1954.

Professional activities

Organic chemical synthesis

Sauter's research focused on the synthesis and reactions of heterocyclic compounds , with derivatives of over a hundred new heterocyclic ring systems (including many spiro systems) being synthesized and new methods being developed. His research results have been published in numerous publications and through lectures at specialist conferences. Cooperation with pharmaceutical companies led to international patents .

He was the organizer or co-organizer of various specialist conferences such as the 17th International Congress of Heterocyclic Chemistry (1999).

He was also the initiator of two regular international conferences: the Ibn Sina International Conference on Pure and Applied Heterocyclic Chemistry (from 2018: Ibn Sina Arab Conference on Heterocyclic Chemistry and its Applications ), which takes place in different locations in Egypt , and the Blue Danube Symposium on Heterocyclic Chemistry , which is held regularly in one of the five participating countries.

Archaeometry

Sauter is one of the early specialists within archaeometry who dealt with the field of organic chemical archaeometry . Typical examples of his research in this area are both his extensive work on the multifunctional birch bark used in prehistoric times (probably the oldest organic-technological product in Europe after alcohol), as well as his analyzes of traces of lipids obtained from prehistoric ceramic fragments were won. The results of such investigations were, for example, that Ötzi - the man from the Similaun glacier - had stuck arrowheads to the shafts with this pitch, and that milk was contained in a vessel found in Troy . For such investigations, he set up a separate research group for organic-chemical archaeometry at the Vienna University of Technology.

Together with Leopold Puchinger (Vienna University of Technology), he was the Austrian partner in a three-year multinational EU research project that dealt with ancient to recently autochthonous organic dyes.
