Schwenk studied sculpture at the Dresden Art Academy as a student of Ernst Rietschel . After graduation, he worked for a short time in Rietschel's studio. A Ganymed relief from 1850 is considered to be his first independent work. After a stay in Rome from 1856 to 1858, he was permanently resident in Dresden.

In 1870, the Moritz Große construction business built a villa with a studio for him in Kötzschenbroda , at Meißner Straße 247 . Friedrich Wilhelm Schwenk died just three months later.

Wilhelm Schwenk is the father of the Dresden painter Georg Schwenk . In Dresden- Wachwitz , the Schwenkstrasse reminds of Wilhelm and Georg Schwenk.
