Friedrich von Tippelskirch (theologian)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Friedrich Carl Ernst August von Tippelskirch (born March 5, 1802 in Pellen near Zinten in East Prussia , † July 17, 1866 in Berlin ) was a Prussian Lutheran theologian and founder and editor of the " People's Gazette for City and Country for Instruction and Entertainment " .

Live and act

Friedrich von Tippelskirch grew up as the son of a landowner and studied first law, then theology in Königsberg (Prussia) and Berlin .

On the basis of a recommendation from Christian Karl Josias von Bunsen , himself a theologian and since 1823 Prussian envoy to the Holy See , von Tippelskirch received the post of legation preacher in Rome in 1829 , where he worked intensively with Bunsen on the further development of the liturgy .

After eleven years, von Tippelskirch had to give up his activity in Rome in 1843 and return to Prussia because of a throat problem.

In 1837 he took up a pastor's position in Giebichenstein near Halle (Saale) . Here, at the suggestion of the Prussian Minister Ludwig Gustav von Thile, he founded the “Volksblatt für Stadt und Land” in 1844 and, as its editor, fought against liberal currents in state and church until 1848. Popularly presented, the paper soon achieved great popularity and was one of the focal points of the Christian-conservative movement of the time. The paper remained true to this direction even after 1848, after von Tippelskirch had given up the editorial office.

In 1852 Friedrich von Tippelskirch went to Berlin and took over the post of hospital chaplain at the Charité . In Berlin he was active in several Inner Mission organizations , often in a leading position. He died of acute heart failure in 1866.
