description

general characteristics

The Ukrainian chess flower grows as a spring-green, perennial herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 15 to 50 centimeters. An onion serves as a storage and persistence organ . It measures about three centimeters in cross section.

leaves

The Ukrainian chess flower has six to twelve leaves . The lowest leaves are more or less opposite to each other on the stem. They have a long tapering shape, their width varies between three and seven millimeters. The middle and upper leaves can be alternate or whirled.

Inflorescence, flower and fruit

One to three, sometimes five nodding flowers combine to form a loose cluster . Above the flowers there is a spiral bract . The six tepals of the bell-shaped to cup-shaped flowers are colored dark red on the outside. The darker checkerboard pattern is striking. This forms a striking contrast to the yellowish colored inside of the bracts, which is provided with a green central stripe. The six tepals of the hermaphrodite flowers are arranged in two circles of three each. The outer tepals measure up to 30 millimeters in length and eight millimeters in width, the inner tepals can be up to 35 millimeters long and 15 millimeters wide. About four millimeters above the base on the inside of the tepals are 10 to 15 millimeters long, linear nectar glands. Two circles with three ungrown stamens surround an upper, three-chamber ovary . This goes into a rough pencil over. This is three columns. The branches of the style measure about two millimeters. The flowering period extends from April to May.

A winged capsule is formed as the fruit .

Distribution and location

The Ukrainian chess flower is common in southern Russia , the Ukraine , northern Kazakhstan and the southwestern part of western Siberia . She likes to colonize steppe depressions , ravine slopes and stony meadows. Also, river terraces and bushes are among their preferred growing sites.

use

In addition to its natural range, the Ukrainian chess flower is sometimes cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is suitable for planting in borders and in rock gardens, whereby the location should not be too dry during the summer months.
