The Fritz-Felsenstein-Haus (FFH) is a private, non-profit organization that sees itself as a competence center for people with physical or multiple disabilities and their relatives.

With its offers, it ensures that people with physical or multiple disabilities can plan and realize their individually appropriate balance of care, participation and self-serving full life.

The Fritz-Felsenstein-Haus is based in Königsbrunn and is listed in the register of associations at the Augsburg District Court .

history

After the Second World War there were hardly any physically handicapped children - during the Nazi regime handicapped people were abused for experiments, killed or simply hidden.

It wasn't until the 1950s that the need for facilities for the physically challenged was recognized. Today's "Penny Parade" was created in Munich in 1950 as a result of a citizens' initiative for people paralyzed by polio . For Augsburg and the administrative district of Swabia , Fritz Felsenstein was the state doctor for the physically handicapped. At the beginning of the sixties this task was taken over by Horst Matthäus. But not only that, he also adopted the idea of founding a school and boarding school. The main criticism of the two doctors: in all of Swabia there were no schools for physically handicapped children. Only when the thalidomide scandal became public in 1961 and children who had suffered thalidomide injuries were born in the Augsburg region did the pressure on the government increase. But it was also the beginning of the construction of the Berlin Wall that challenged Germany in terms of domestic and foreign policy. One had other worries than taking care of such "little things".

Foundation of the first facilities in Göggingen

Nevertheless: A preschool kindergarten for physically handicapped and thalidomide-damaged children eV as well as a swimming school eV were founded in 1966 by Matthäus. He himself offered swimming lessons in the municipal swimming pool, which was the start of the first important initiatives. In September 1967 the time had come: the special school for handicapped children began its work. At that time, the organization founded by Matthäus was still called the “Private School Association for Physically Handicapped Children”. On February 1, 1968, the Fritz-Felsenstein-School started with 13 pupils and eight preschoolers in Ulmer Strasse in Augsburg. The official opening took place on May 8th by the then District President Frank Sieder. In 1970 there were already 64 students. That is why the school's move to a larger building with rooms on the ground floor on the grounds of the Hessing Foundation in Göggingen was welcomed. The boarding school, which at the time was only attended by children who lived further away, initially stayed on Ulmer Strasse.

In 1972 100 students went to the Fritz-Felsenstein-School, which in the meantime had a day care center as well as the boarding school . An extension of the building in Göggingen ensured a slight relaxation in the rapidly growing facility.

Relocation to Königsbrunn

When the new building began in 1974 on the current site in Königsbrunn, the number of students had already increased to 150. The move took place in the autumn of 1977. By the time of the inauguration on June 30, 1978 by the then Minister of State for Education and Culture, Hans Maier , the number of students had already grown to 200. The facility was built for 180 children; the building was already too small when it moved in.

Due to the growing demand, in 1978 it became necessary to set up special classes for children with severe multiple disabilities, for which care plays an essential role in the classroom.

In 1979 the specialist service department was established. By hiring social pedagogues and a psychologist, those responsible responded to the parents' growing need for intensive advice.

For school leavers with multiple disabilities, the work level (today vocational school level) was introduced in 1981, which serves to prepare for the workshop for the disabled and partially replaces the vocational school.

In 1983 an extension of the day care center could be started, which was inaugurated in 1985. The time of rapid growth was now over.

Expansion of the offers

In 1985 a model test for the use of computers and electronic aids for physically handicapped students was started. This resulted in the advice center for electronic aids and computers for the physically handicapped (ELECOK), which is now an integral part of the school.

With the opening of the first residential group in 1986 for six adults on the ground floor of the boarding school, a further conceptual expansion of the competence center was realized. A year later, a second residential group for five adults was founded on Donauwörther Strasse in Königsbrunn. A third residential group took place in 1994 in cooperation with Markt Mering . In 1994 the Fritz-Felsenstein-Haus looked after 17 adults and 250 students.

In 1997, with the start of the Open Work with the Disabled (OBA), new territory was entered. For the first time, there were also counseling offers for physically disabled people from the Augsburg district who were not cared for in the FFH.

In autumn 1998 Karin Stoiber, the wife of the then Prime Minister , opened a barrier-free playground on the boarding school grounds.

In 1999, the offer was supplemented by a support facility for adults, which now over 20 people visit.

Structural extensions

Extension of the Fritz Felsenstein School

In 2000 the extension of the school was completed for 30 school classes. With the extension, a school preparatory facility (SVE) could be reintroduced at the same time, which had already existed in the initial phase of the facility.

In order to remedy the permanent shortage of space in the therapy department, new rooms for occupational therapy were created in 2001 by adding additional floors.

In 2003 the renovation of the in-house swimming pool , which had existed in Königsbrunn since the beginning, was completed - now with significantly better, handicapped-accessible equipment and larger changing and care rooms.

The rooms of the boarding school and its equipment were no longer up-to-date after 25 years of use. The new boarding school opened its doors in 2004, and since then 40 students have had well-equipped living and care rooms at their disposal.

The Fritz Felsenstein School has been participating in the European Comenius project since the 2005/06 school year .

The lack of space in the two residential groups for adults in Königsbrunn was remedied in 2006. The district of Aichach-Friedberg and Markt Mering provided 13 adults with new living space after the renovation of the former district hospital in Mering.

The vacant rooms in the Fritz-Felsenstein-Haus in Königsbrunn were ready for renovation. In 2008, the funding center for adults was able to move into new rooms with attractive furnishings.

Extension of the advisory offer

In February 2010, another department of the Fritz-Felsenstein-Haus was founded under the name “Consulting Team”. Various advisory services from the facility are now brought together under one roof. Financed primarily through private funds, the "Interaktiv" advice center located there provides advice on communication and support technology .

Current situation

In the meantime, around 300 children and young people are supported and looked after in the Fritz-Felsenstein-Haus; For adults there are currently 18 places available in the residential groups and 18 places in the funding facility. In an intensive development and consultation process over 1.5 years, a mission statement was developed with the involvement of all employees . The individual guiding principles are intended to support day-to-day work and to set the direction for further Felsenstein development.

Structure of the facility

Due to the organizational form of a registered association , the general assembly with currently around 200 members is at the top of the facility. These elect the honorary board of seven members. The board of directors has appointed a managing director to manage the business. Two staff units (central administration team and central service team) support them in their tasks. The association currently has a total of eight non-profit institutions with their respective institution managers.
