The Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark is a stadium in the city of Heidelberg , which is used for rugby union and 7-a-side rugby games.
history
The Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark is located at Harbigweg 9 in the Kirchheim district of Heidelberg . It is a municipal sports facility, which was built in cooperation and with the financial contribution of the Rugby Association of Baden-Württemberg and the German Rugby Association . The stadium was opened in 1996 by the then mayor Beate Weber-Schuerholz and by the widow Roberta Grunebaum-Gmünder.
The rugby stadium is named after the Frankfurt rugby player of the Jewish faith Fritz Grunebaum , who was active for SC Frankfurt in 1880 and studied and obtained his doctorate in Heidelberg. After immigrating to the United States of America before the Nazis in 1935 , he founded the American Rugby Foundation and donated the Karin Grunebaum Cancer Research Foundation , a leading cancer research center , to Boston University . Fritz Grunebaum died in 1992. In his will, he donated the Fritz Grunebaum Prize to Heidelberg University for the best doctoral thesis in economics, the Palatinate Museum received valuable works of art and the city of Heidelberg received a large sum to promote the rugby game, which was used for the construction of the stadium has been.

The stadium has two covered stands. The main stand has 318 covered seats, the grandstand opened in 2016 on the back straight has 434 covered seats and 400 standing places. The sports park is a pure rugby stadium. It is the home of the multiple German champions Rudergesellschaft Heidelberg . It is also used by the selection teams of the Rugby Association of Baden-Württemberg. The German National Rugby Union team has played a large number of its home international matches in the Fritz-Grunebaum-Sportpark since the stadium opened.
