Fritz Jaeger (geographer)

Fritz Jaeger (born January 8, 1881 in Offenbach am Main ; died November 26, 1966 in Zurich ) was a German geographer and explorer . He later also became a Swiss citizen.

Life

From 1899 Jaeger studied mathematics, physics and later also geography and geology in Heidelberg, Zurich and Berlin. In 1904 he passed the senior teacher examination in Karlsruhe and went on a research trip to East Africa and Egypt . Stays in German East Africa followed . The first ascent to the summit of Mount Meru is attributed to Fritz Jaeger in 1904 and Carl Uhlig in 1901.

In 1909 he completed his habilitation in Berlin, where he received an extraordinary professorship for colonial geography in 1911 and became head of the colonial department of the Institute of Geography. In the years from 1914 to 1919 he undertook research trips through German South West Africa and South West Africa .

In 1925 he was given a full professorship for geography at the University of Basel , which he held until his retirement in 1947.

In 1926 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He was also the recipient of the silver Gustav Nachtigal Medal of the Society for Geography in Berlin (1918), the golden Eduard Vogel Medal of the Society for Geography in Leipzig (1921) and the golden Eduard Rüppell Medal of the Frankfurt Geographical Society .

Jaeger died on November 26, 1966 in Zurich.

A large collection of his original publications from the years 1914–1919 is in the National Archives of Namibia . In addition, numerous publications, especially photos, are in the possession of the Namibia Scientific Society .
