Fritz Langensiepen

Fritz Langensiepen (* 1942 in Simmern im Hunsrück ) is a German linguist and regional researcher of the Rhineland .

Life and work

Langensiepen was born the son of a primary school teacher. He grew up with a sister in rural Kappel , then went to high school there after moving to Bonn . He studied German language and literature, general linguistics and Rhenish regional history at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate on the subject of "Medieval storytelling of rhymes".

His work focuses on everyday regional cultural history, for example beer brewing , and the languages on the Rhine and Maas .

He first worked as a consultant for linguistic research, since 1979 as head of the language department and from 1985 to 2007 as head of the LVR Institute for Regional Studies and Regional History (then still: Office for Rhenish Regional Studies - ARL) in Bonn , a subdivision of the Rhineland Regional Association (LVR ) with headquarters in Cologne - Deutz , before he retired.

In his capacity as head of office he was involved in various projects, publications and events, wrote forewords and gave opening speeches, for example at the international congress "Geister, Narren, Rosa Funken" in the Godesberger Stadthalle, which dealt scientifically with carnival customs and from the office for Rhenish regional studies. Langensiepen was on the advisory board of the Akademie för uns Kölsche Sproch until 2008 . In the 1980s, he contributed to the development of the Rheinische Dokumenta , a simple phonetic transcription for the local languages of the other regions from the Lower Rhine to the southern Palatinate . After initial skepticism, he supported research on current and historical people praying for health in the Eifel . and wrote the preface to the publication of the results. He participated in an investigation into the adoption of Halloween customs in the Rhineland in 2000 and 2001.
